"The day my world turned upside down" story

Gracie jumped up and ran to her quickly and I guess that was too much for the poor timid greyhound because…. “YIPP!!!!” and off she went, zooming out the door into the snow. “WAIT! NO, NO! COME BACK!” Gracie barked. I ran after her but the little greyhound was too fast. As I slowly walked back to the shed, I gave Gracie a grin. “Buddy’s alive!!!” I woofed happily! “Lets go look for him!” Gracie barked! “If we go now, the pups will die because of the cold!” I told her. “But….” She started, but I interrupted her, “I’m sure if Buddy is alive, he knows where to go to find food and shelter. Plus, we’re a days walk from where we last saw him, and there’s no telling if he’s traveling away from us. I suggest we go look for him in the spring when it gets warmer.” “But he could be dead by then!” Gracie exclaimed! “He’ll be fine. I know Buddy. He’ll probably bed down in a den or a shed, like us.” I said and then growled, “Gracie, stop bickering about this! Its either Buddy or your puppies!” She hung her head and then asked “What do you think we should do Goldie? Goldie?” then she looked over to the puppies and Goldie. I gasped. The rooster lay dead between the 2 puppys, his head hung and eyes closed…. the 2 puppys pressed against him.

The rest of the day went slow and miserable. The snow turned to rain, the roof started to leak, and worst of all… Goldies body was starting to smell already. I couldn’t bury him because the ground was frozen solid. We said kind words for him, and put him in a nesting box and covered him with a straw. I stared at his lifeless body for hours. So many deaths… and Goldie had been through them all… Cody, Nellie, the 2 pups…. And now he was gone as well. It’s the circle of life, I guess…. But it was so unfair! So now it was just me and Gracie and the pups. Winters take a lot of lifes… its so sad. I remembered the time I was in a animal shelter… it was lovely there, but they were going to euthanize me because nobody wanted me, so I escaped. Its so sad at how many dogs are homeless, it makes my tail tuck. A month later, the puppies eyes were open as were their ears. Gracie had named them Tucker and Delilah. Gracie suddenly decided one day to go look for Buddy. “I don’t care what you say, Fido! I’m going, and that’s that! The puppys are strong enough to stand the weather and can walk a little bit. I can’t wait anymore, I miss him too much!” She said. So, not feeling enough power to protest, I gave one last goodbye to Goldie, for we knew the nesting box is where he would of liked to rest so we left him there. We wandered for days, until we finally came to the spot where I had left Buddy. “Buddy!” Gracie called, but I shushed her with a growl. “Don’t do that! The wolves live around here!” “Sorry.” She whimpered. We finally came to a clearing where a deer stood, grazing. “Excuse me, miss, but have you seen a dog around here? A small dog?” I asked her politely. She raised her head, chewing her cud and said, “Yep.” “Where!?” Gracie demanded. “Right behind ya’ll.” The deer said, then put her head down. We turned around and there running through the field was….

“BUDDY!!! LOOK OUT!!!” I howled a warning, but it was too late. There was Buddy, running through the field towards us, but what he didn’t see was a BIG black bear chasing him! The bear was gaining on him, and now Buddy turned around and saw the danger. He swerved to the right, then the left and did a bunch of zig zags. I ran past Buddy and stopped right infront of the running bear and growled menacingly. The bear tried to stop, but he skidded on the snow and we crashed together. My nose stung from the horrid smell that came from his fur… I could tell this bear had just killed something because the blood was all over it’s fur. Finally he stopped and I jumped off him and darted around him, barking and nipping his fur. He got irritated and started trying to charge me, but I was too quick for him. The bear spotted Buddy as the little terrier came hurtling towards the bear and bit him right in his snout. The bear growled and shook off Buddy. It let out a roar as it stood on its 2 hind legs above Buddy! “NO!” I barked loudly as I jumped on his back and bit his neck. The bear roared again and threw me off his back and I landed in a snowbank that collapsed after I hit it. I dug at the snow but it was too deep… and soon… the air started to run out and I had trouble breathing.
