"The day my world turned upside down" story

"LET THEM GO!!!" I roared at the fox as I ran aggressively towards him. The fox ran away, with Delilah still in his mouth. I ran over to Tucker and quickly asked, "Is she alive?" He shook his head and whimpered and cried. I comforted him and nuzzled his neck. "What happened?" I asked quietly. "Me and my sister went out to play in the snow while you guys talked about boring stuff, then the fox came and took us!" He said, still whimpering in between words. I picked him up by the scruff of his collar, than ran back towards the shed. I approached the spot where I had crossed the road, but I gasped. There was a mountain of snow on all sides of the road! (I now know a snow plow pushed the snow up into banks.) I climbed up halfway, then my paws began to slip! I dug my claws in the snow, but I sunk lower and lower until I hit the ground. Determined not to give in, I dug my paws deeper in the snow as I took each step up the mountain of snow. I threw the pup up to the top of the mountain, then finally jumped up myself. I made it, now the question was how to get down. Gingerly I put the pup between my front legs, sat down and scooted forward. Down we went! Slipping and turning and spinning, it all made my head dizzy! We got to the bottom and skidded on the icy road. Now to climb the other bank.... I threw Tucker on top, than began to climb once again. Suddenly, I heard a noise. Around the corner came another snow plow! I watched as the pointy sides cut through the snow banks on the sides of the road... and I was next! I climbed frantically, but I kept sliding back down! It edged closer and closer, the driver not seeing me.... I yowled in pain.....

I yowled in pain because a rock fell down from the top of the bank where Tucker stood. “Sorry! It slipped by accident! Are you ok!?” Tucker barked. The plow was no more than 2 feet away from me when suddenly I had a idea! I dug and made a gap in the bank of snow, and pulled myself into it and kept digging until I was at least 5 feet into the bank of snow. Amazingly, I did this in less than 5 seconds! As the plow went by it left about 1 inch of snow left from where I was. “That was close….” I said nervously and sighed in relief. “You okay up there, tucker?” I barked. “Yup!” I heard a small reply. Once I climbed to the top of the snow bank, I did the same thing I did last time… put him between my front legs and…. “WHOOSH!!” Once we reached the bottom, I resumed my trot towards the shed, along side a frozen river. Tucker dangled from my mouth. When suddenly I let out a cry of pain as a heavy, metal jaw clamped around my back leg. Tucker flew from my mouth, and landed on the river, skidding on the ice. My pain forgotten, I looked at the ice he lay on. It was cracking.

“Don’t move.” I said, trying to keep my cool. I felt helpless as I was pinned to the ground by the hunters trap. I tried to remember the time one of my old owners hunting dogs got stuck on ice…. I think the dog edged slowly towards land, one inch at a time. “FIDO! PLEASE!!! I’M SCARED!!” The puppy barked! “No! If you move, the ice will crack! Just slowly, ever so slowly…” I started to say, when he said “I’M COMING!” and jumped on all fours and tried to run on the ice towards me. Big mistake. Down he went… into the ice cold water. I bowed my head in sadness… I did not want to watch the poor pup die. This was Buddy’s last puppie… oh how sad he will be. The sadness will probably take his life. I heard howls and barks for help, but I couldn’t look up. If I looked at the puppy, the scene would never leave my mind. It would haunt me forever. “GRACIE!! NO!!” I heard a bark from behind me as a flash of brown went flying past me! Buddy came running up and we both watched as Gracie dove into the water after her puppy. Tucker was nowhere to be seen. “Gracie! COME BACK! The cold will kill you!” Buddy barked loudly! Gracie suddenly was taken by the current, and swept downstream. “GRACIE!” I barked frantically! Buddy went running after her, along the side of the river. I stayed where I was, for I had no other choice. Buddy came back much later, panting and with a sad, depressed, gloomy look on his face. “I’m sorry. I tried….” I began to apologize when Buddy barked to silence me. “I understand.” he said. I told him what happened in great detail, while he attempted to unlatch the steel trap. Suddenly it sprang open with a “CLICK!” and out came my leg. Without saying a word, he walked away, to no where in particular. I watched and thought to myself, “Poor guy. After all the friends and adventures we have had together, he’s lost all but me. Just like the old days, me and him… and Goldie, tromping through the woods together.” Only this time, Goldie was not with us. And a great burden weighed down his body.
