The Duck Thread

oh that's awful that they did that and did it so close to your baby's. Hope she gets better.

Thanks, I'm doing my best...

A$$hole$!!!! Please keep me posted. My poor baby. I am so glad she has u to take care of her. Is the rest of your puff flock ok?

Everyone else is fine, no issues... Io has been going higher up our hill (think she has a hidden nest, but we can't find it) and that's where I think the neighbors got overzealous with their chemicals...

Btw, this stems from our area having a nasty flea population boom of a rather difficult strain to eradicate... they believe they're infested with feather lice/mites from our birds... which are pest free... :/

Anyways, she came right back to our back door with her eyes closed... have irrigated them several times but she'd only open them very briefly right afterwards... now she is keeping them open for a few minutes...

I added Terramycin after the drops and think that's soothing the irritation more... appetite and spirits are good, just her eyes are very swollen... Lady Grey and Crash stuck by her side all night...

She kept her eyes open to munch down some meall worms, so looks more positive....

My husband built this divider for me. I used it when I introduced my ducklings to the adults. I had them in the enclosure (see picture below). I could put this divider down the center of the 10x10 enclosure and cut it in half. The babies stayed on one side, the adults on the other. That way they could see each other but not touch. I did this for about 2 weeks, then let them together supervised for a few hours at night. After about a week of doing this, I let them free range together. They stay all together. The only aggression I have had is from the babies to the adults, but that only lasted a little while, they now stay together as one flock! My enclosure: I can even use the divider for a sick bird, as you will notice it has hinges in the center. I can use it straight to cut the enclosure in half of at a right degree angle to just cut off a small corner of the enclosure for a sick bird, that way they can still see the sick one and I don't have to go through introducing them again. It has worked for me. Good luck, Mandy P.S. We aren't dead on this thread! (Ha Ha, I made a funny!!) We have a great amount of fun!!!
I love your setup. Might just have to copy your design ;) ETA I mean the enclosure. I need something like that!

We were trying to make the chain link last longer, it was always in the mud when it was on the ground. It is just a tractor supply dog run. We elevated it so that I could get under it to clean if needed, unfortunately the ducks get under it when I am trying to round them up, hence we have "duck rodeos"! It has worked for us, I keep hay in there for them. I replace the hay every few days and hose the whole thing out about once a week.

We will be leaving them in it for 3 days this weekend. I will put their kiddie pool in there with them, hopefully they will stay cool. So far the only predators we have had are snakes. The ducks seem to know not to sleep close to the chainlink. Notice that we have plywood around 3 sides of the enclosure for about 2 feet up the side, to keep predators from being able to get them there. We have had it for about 6 months. So far the only thing I would do different is make the landing (where I walk in) a little larger.

You are welcome to copy!

I see you have Swedish ducks. I have noticed that my Black Swedish don't get in the water to swim as much as the Cayuga and Pekin. Have you noticed that or am I just the odd ball? They do go into the pool but more often than not they just stand around watching the other ducks swim. I have 2 hens and they both do it.

Whew so I got the introduction pen moved and set up in the duck pen. At first all 3 of my current ducks were really interested. Almost at a worrisome level. The 2 drakes started nipping at each other but then settled down. My 1 hen nearly took off my drakes head and he went and sulked on the other side of the big pen. Now just my rouen drake and my black swedish hen are showing interest. They are walking around the pen trying to find a way in and then nipping each other every once in awhile. Anyone here that speaks duck lol. I'm dying to know what all this new behavior means? :)
