The Duck Thread

Thanks Amykins. I despise ticks and that is a big reason we got ducks. They are horrible here! Maiya has been improving slowly. This girl is a pure 12 pounds of spunk so I think she will pull all the way through. She has gotten use back of one of her rear legs now at about 85 % and the other that was the worst is at about 20%. She is also much more alert now. She has her antibiotics and also Rimadyl (I understand that to be like an aspirin type thing? Oddly, it makes her loopy like vicodin would for people). But the journey has been tough, I can't stand to see her suffering. She is such a love bug. Though I am glad she did show symptoms (wish they hadn't been so severe) because her vet said some never show any signs and they are just gone. I'll take a victory no matter how small it may be ;) She is the salt and pepper (grey) one in the front.
Cuteness x 3! I sure hope your furbaby regains all her motor functions soon. I'm a dog person as well. I bred and raised AKC Yorkies and Maltese for 11 years. We have 7 dogs that all together weigh 32lb :) I have a desert tortoise who's been here longer than me. My late husband found him. I've lived here 25 years so I know he's older than that. Our mini farm consists of 20 rabbits (right now),6 chicken & a Frizzle rooster, at present about 20 quail, 6 WH ducks & 3 geese, plus a growing mealworm farm.

We lost our best little show girl overnight last night. Acting fine when they went in the pen last night, came out this morning to find her floating in the pond already gone. I'm so depressed I can't even think of anything to do today other than mess around on the Internet and try not to think.

Pasting this from what I was telling Lacrystol in the Call duck thread:

Not positive what happened to her just yet. She was fine last night when she went into the pen, floating in the pond dead when we first went out around 11 am today. She'd obviously been dead for several hours because the rigor mortis had already subsided. No injuries I could detect when we examined her, and my diagnosis (not being a vet) is oviduct eversion that wasn't caught in time. I already put in a call to our vet as soon as we found her and asked him to please try to get us in sometime tomorrow, but his office doesn't open until 10 am.

I'm so sad.

Thank you, Deb. You're always so sweet.

I'll let the rest of you know what happened once I find out, just for education purposes. We all educate one another. She had a lot of water in her lungs, but that doesn't seem to be what did her in. It's probably because she was already into the worst of the prolapse when she got in the water, then she didn't have the strength to get out and took in a lot of water. Maybe I'm off-base in thinking it was the prolapse that caused it, but I have a wonderful vet who will be able to tell me what the real cause of death was.
