The Duck Thread

Thanks! I am sure she will get better, she has only been limping a day or so, so I hopefully caught it early.  We'll keep at it, it's such a tiny hole, but it's obviously bothering her.

All responses are welcome!

Thanks again.
Mandy
How's she doing today?

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Got a dark green duck egg today! What a surprise!

I thought both Maggie and Mattie were each laying a nice white egg every other day since
March 2. With this green egg AND a white egg later this morning, I now know that only one of the girls had been laying.

Now I need to figure out which girl is laying the dark egg.

will be really difficult to candle those.

And now I really want to know what breed cross they are...Pekin X Swede or Pekin X Cayuga.

That looks like the black bloom of a Cayuga to me.

Note, if it is and you aren't hatching that particular egg, you can scrub the black off and the egg under should be white. A green egg is green through the shell.

Also you can wait a few days and they will tend to be lighter, that looks like a first egg. Later eggs will look more gray.

Quote: Okie Dokie! That means we have Pekin X Cayuga ducks. I have 8 of the white eggs in the incubator and will wait a while to hatch the dark Cayuga eggs.

A few days old

Three weeks old

After muddying their water tank....at 7 months and one hen laying.

Someone posted on the stickie note for hatching dark colored chicken eggs to use a fine grit sand paper to clean thin stripes of the colored bloom from Maran eggs for candling when incubating...wonder if that would work on dark duck eggs.....

Here are a few better pictures from today of Morris, Maggie and Mattie (previously named Pinky, Tiny and Deuce)

Morris has a beautiful green head and what appears to be blue on his wings and back.

Mattie is in front. She has some color on her wings and has two spots on her head.
