The EE braggers thread!!!

He has the some of the same pretty feathers as my fav EE, Hoot. If we were allowed to have Roos here, I'd like to find one like him to hatch out some more.

He does resemble your Hoot. I hope I can find someone to take him. Since we're new with chickens, we only got six, so that leaves five probable/possible pullets (2 more EEs, 2 Wyandottes and 1 Dominique).

Anyone have trouble with your hens eating each other's beards? I have a LF EE and a bantam EE, and a bunch of d'uccle and d'anver bantams and all except one have their adorable beards eaten off. It doesn't really seem to be an aggression thing, because I rarely see them peck/chase each other, and I am pretty sure they do it at night as they sit next to each other roosting... any suggestions? I have tried blue coat, but it seems to wear off so fast on the skin it doesn't make a difference. I also feed them a little Calf Manna with their layer pellets to help their feathers, so I think they are getting enough protein.

I want the beards back!!

You may want to check your birds and coop for lice and mites. External parasites can either suck blood or eat feathers. I treat my free range layers with wood ashes, and bathe my silkies with flea/tick kitty shampoo as well as dust them with the ashes once they are dry. Hopefully you can get their beards back (that's the cutest part lol).

Both my Faverolles and my EE are "naked neck". I THINK the Anconas started the beard/muff pulling but the Faverolles do it as well. Then they moult, the feathers grow back in and a month or so later the feathers start getting pulled out again.

I'm hoping that when the 3 new EEs get bigger, Zorra, their "mom" will continue to protect them from the other chickens and they can keep their plumage.

Update on my EEs! They're now 5 weeks old.
Cashew is getting those buff feathers on her head; hopefully when her adult plumage comes in the white stays.

Do they look like pullets to you?

Cashew sure looks like a pullet - the other needs more time for certainty. Not a lot of pink there - but the comb is bigger. Give it another few weeks on that one! :)

My cockerel had a three row comb when I bought him at 4 days old. At 5 weeks, his comb was completely yellow. At 6 weeks it was just starting to get a hint of pink. By 8 weeks it was bright red.
Six weeks

Eight weeks.

Notice how he looks like two different birds. Drastic changes in color or pattern almost always indicate cockerel.

AND at 6 weeks I see no telltale red patches on the wings. In fact the pretty even patterning would have had me guessing pullet. Sneaky that one! Thanks for posting the pictures, nothing like a 2 week comparison to keep us on our toes. My girls just turned 5 weeks so I have a few more to go before I can be sure they ARE girls.
