So here's an interesting thing about quality and storing of incubated eggs.

[BTW--I am NOT saying this is ideal and that the other proven/suggested ways to collect and store eggs aren't valid. I'm just sharing some curious observations.]

As I just posted, I've just set some of my own flock's eggs. Now I only have 3 pullets laying so far. They just started about 6 weeks ago. Kind of a goofy group to cross with an Ameraucana cockerel, but said cockerel was sexed a girl! This wasn't planned.

Nevertheless, to get a decent batch to incubate, I had to stretch things.

I had 3 groups:
* One that were eggs that were freshly laid and collected in nice enough weather.
* A second group of older eggs---some close to 2 weeks old.
* A third group were eggs that were collected when I got home from work after the eggs were in temperatures in the lower 30's all day. Cold.

None of the eggs were stored in 50 degree temp once collected, but stored in the kitchen at about 65 - 70 degrees.
I marked the eggs with "C" for cold and "O" for old.

Well, of the eggs with viable chicks inside, there are lots marked "O" and "C". Only one of the eggs that was a dud was one of these "O" eggs.

Curious???

I think HEAT is the biggest problem with eggs. Room temp and cooler seem to work fine. Get the temp up to the 80-90's and you have a problem. I hatched some eggs that were pushing 2 months old when I set them and still had a very good hatch. I don't think 2 weeks would really effect viability, 3-4 weeks or more might. I hatch eggs 10days to 2 weeks all the time.

My eggs were always stored in the kitchen for the most part during the summer. Temps were usually around 80 consistently during the summer. Didn't have much of an issue at all.

I tried to remember to bring them to the basement, but they often were left at that temperature for close to a week. I have never set eggs older than 3 weeks.

I posted about this a bit ago and as a quick reminder, I have a blue Ameraucana cockerel [not EE] and three pullets that are laying: A barred rock, a black australorp, and a black silkie.

I gathered some eggs and put them in the incubator. I just candled for the first time tonight at day 12. Of the 15 eggs, four were duds. So I have 11 eggs with little chicks inside! I could see them moving!

There are 4 PBR's, 4 BA's and 3 silkies.

Woot! My very own EE's!

That's great!!!!! Can't wait to see the pics after they hatch!!!!! Such an exciting time.
I've collected 5 of my Cayuga duck eggs so far & will be putting them in the bator tomorrow. My chickens are not consistent enough with having fertile eggs where I would be willing to pop a bunch of them in to 'cook' just yet. Hey, maybe one of my girls will want to do it herself, then I'd be fine with it

Got it. Interesting. I thought things were a little more difficult than they are! I bet some of my eggs were around 2 1/2 weeks. Who knows, I just was amazed to see so many chicks inside when I thought I might have 5 or so potentially viable. :) Thanks!

Well you never know! I just popped these in because I cannot keep my cockerel and he'll be gone soon. So this was my only chance. I'm so amazed right now that so many are viable! You just never know...

Its also no guarantee that those viable eggs will make it to hatch.....I did 3 hatches this spring and in each hatch I had 2 or 3 eggs that did not make it between lock down and hatch or never did pip, one was because a a severe cross beak it could not have pipped if I helped it....the others I have no idea why they died at about 19 days...........kIM .............SO KEEP THOSE FINGERS CROSSED.........

I just want to share a cockerel that was hatched around mid-May or early June. He now lives with my in-laws. I think he made a beautiful boy with an awesome beard but he does not have a rose comb. He is the brother to the 2 white/black ones I posted earlier.
