The EE braggers thread!!!

I have a Delaware that lays a light pink egg and a Marans that puts so much bloom on her eggs that they are dark pink, although sometimes they are white!

There are some that lay plum eggs. It's a colour that goes all the way through the shell, so there's currently some argument that the ones with that gene in the mix are likely to cross with another breed and provide either a dark reddish brown (crossed with brown) or a pinkish colour (crossed with white) or a lavender colour (crossed with blue). Apparently it's not a horribly common gene and often hides behind other, more dominant genes. I've not seen any proof of it; but, it's in some of the articles I've been reading about genes related to eggshell and bloom colouration.

If you could figure out how to breed a chicken that lays a plum colored egg you would be a very rich person!

I'm working on it.

I agree with Outrun Acres, I think it was the fox. I have had both dog and fox kills.. and domestic dogs do not eat everything but the feet - only the fox did that. The dogs just killed it - and went playing elsewhere - they weren't hungry - just thought it was fun. The fox was hungry.

I would warn your neighbors to keep their dogs cooped up until you get rid of the fox, tell them you don't want to get their dogs by mistake...?
I guess that I should have pointed out that the cats were eating the remains of the chicken, when I found the legs, feathers, etc. The dog came out of the chicken pen with feathers in his mouth, the day before, and I couldn't get a shot without endangering all of the other chickens. The fox was about 1/4 mile away from the pen, and has not been seen prior to, or since, my shooting at him. (Shooting 150-200 yards with a compact 45 caliber pistol, one-handed, in the dark with a spotlight in the other hand, is not likely to produce positive results, tho I did dust his arse with mud on each of the 4 shots.) He's not showing on game cameras. I'm watching for him (the fox), and the neighbor has agreed to either catch and pen the dog, or accept the fact that I'm going to kill it if it's seen on my place again. Thanks for all the remarks. I do miss that lil Hen. I believe that she woulkd have had some cool lil chicks. I regret not setting her past few weeks worth of eggs, but how could I have known? (sigh)

OK, I have a couple of really pretty girls that are out of EE hens (don't know what their mamas looked like) and a Lavender Orpington roo. I love their gold and soft grey feathering and would like some more.

I have two young EE roos that may or maynot be somewhat related to them. (probably not, but possible through the hens line). One boy is mostly red, with some black and some lacing on his chest. The other boy has a lot of darker red, with soft grey and his hackles are white/blonde and his breast is red and grey with lacing.

I know I might not get more like these girls in the first generation but wondering which boy might give me the best chances of a nice son to breed back to the mothers for a chance of the pretty gold and grey in the second generation?

I'm leaning towards the red boy myself. then I think about how the other boy already has some grey on him. Both are young and have nice pea combs

OMG! What is wrong with me!?! I have 11 hens in the coop/run, 9 in the brooder and 15 eggs in the incubator.....and yet when I went to the Tractor Supply, I had to come home with these two cutie EEs. With cheeks like that, who can resist, right? And the craziest thing is that my DH was with me and let me do it!!!
