Oh cool. I'm excited to see the results next round. I have a legbar silkie cross. if those end up being colored layers mixed with a EE down the line, That would be quite the surprise too I'm guessing. I saw a purple egg color. What chicken does that come from?

My hen finally hatched some EE chick. The downs of four of the chicks is a silver/grey color. The other chick has very dark chipmunk stripes, and is brownish/red. The six one is a black australorp.

Eggs come in 2 base colors. White or Blue. There are stories of pink, but the jury is still out on that.
Brown eggs are actually an outer coating some breeds put on the shell. If you look at a cracked brown egg, the shell is actually a white shell.
This colored coating can come in various shades, from a very light, almost cream to a dark chocolate. Sometimes just the right amount can seem "rosey".
Blue eggs as well come in many shades.
When the brown coating is applied to blue eggs, usually you'll get some shade of "green". However, with the many shades of blue and brown...other colors are possible. A reddish tinted brown on a heavily blue egg can look almost purple. Usually though as the chicken lays more, both the egg color and coating tend to lighten and your purple gets more green.

Is My chicken an Ameraucana? Officially the answer is "If it does not meet the Ameraucana Breed Standard, it is not an Ameraucana." Part if that standard is color, if it's not a standard color, it's not an Ameraucana.
I would personally add..." unless it's an accepted project color " Even Ameraucan Breeders have no qualm with calling a Lavendar an Ameraucana.

As for the combs, with the mixed genetics of EE's, unless you know what the parents genetics are, you can get a lot of different combs!!

What color Orps are you putting with that Lavender Ameraucana?

She's an EE. All my hatchery birds had odd combs. It sounds like she's top hen keeping the others in line.

Some EEs have the barnyard-mix color that is a mash up of different colors and patterns. Some of this type are super beautiful and I'd love to set some of those patterns.

Wonky combs tend to be a clue as well. So is the yellow skin which will give you green shanks. Body shape is all over on EEs as well.

Ameraucanas have specific colors that they come in (some breeders are working to add some). Combs look a specific way. They have white skin and same basic body shape from bird to bird.

Oh! Thank you for pointing that out. So much information I'm dazed and confused.

Thanks for the pics and further identifiers Hinotori. I thought her wonky comb was a defect or an indication that she wasn't well. Good to know it's normal.

My current EE rooster. Sorry I had to hold him down so he wouldn't run or fly away.


One of 9 of my EE hens. Don't know what color to call her, I think she was suppose to be a golden duckwing. Instead she turned out gold with black spots. Looks somewhat similar to a Golden Campine hen. Barring/Mottling not as nice though.

Another of my EE hens. Blue/Red Splash.

And another of my EE hens.



These three hens are sisters or 1/2 sisters to the above rooster. The hens are penned with a Naked Neck rooster as of today so that I can add more to my Green Egger Naked Neck project. The rooster is penned with two Naked Neck hens for the same purpose.

I just purchase cream leg bar hatching eggs for my broody EE yesterday! I wanted D'uccle, but they had stopped laying. Actually really excited about the legbars too though, & they threw in some extra random eggs. Blue Orpington, gold cochin, Blue polish. Lol. Idr. What else, but she now has 16 eggs under her and she seems a happy camper! Can't wait to see her with all her babies!!!
