The Egger Flock Selection Story 2022

Following! Also you NEED to keep the SF🙏
Thanks! My aunt isn’t super keen on feather feet, but I have heard so much good stuff about SF that I put one in the order anyway. We sat down with two lists and everything that was on both lists got added first, then we alternated adding one each from the ones we wanted most until we hit 16. I think that’s pretty fair! The silver gray Dorking was next on my list but barely missed the cut! Will be at the top for next years order unless I can get a Welbar or Blue Cuckoo, neither of which McM carries. ❤️

I LOVE feathered feet! I think SFs are pretty cool because I had one at one time! Also in case you didn't know they have five toes.

Placed a new order today! Ordered Cream Legbar hatching eggs! My Wheaton Ameraucana egg guy fell through. Really wanted another blue egg layer…the fact that they are auto-sex is a bonus! Anyone have any pics of your legbar chicks male or female so I can see the differences? If I decide to keep one for the yard I’ll know it’s a female! Will set my eggs on May 28, for a hatch date of June 18, right before my chick order ships! (I have Monday the 20th off so I can be home all day for any last-minute hatchers!)

Countdown to chicks:
22 weeks!

Yay!

21weeks to go!
Slight update:
Still have McMurray order in place. I’ve been trying to confirm with the local hatchery for our 6 chick order, and haven’t heard back, so might need a backup plan…possibly 7 from Ideal or Mt Healthy..,stay tuned!
So 16 McMurray+ 1 mystery + 6 hatching eggs (ordered Cream Legbars) + 6/7 local order= our max of 30 new chicks! 😊 I may hatch a second 1/2 dozen of the blue Wheaton Ameraucana (think I found someone with eggs!) in case of a low percentage hatch…still haven’t decided yet! What do you guys think?
I will give the local hatchery until the end of the month to get back to me and then make other plans.

The more the merrier :D

So the local guy got back to me today. Turns out they had a bunch of workers at the other business who got sick (guessing Covid) and were just overwhelmed with work. Still on for my order! Woohoo! He also told me he would anticipate having a few extra female chicks from the other orders that week, so we can definitely snag a few more when we pick up our 6. So that is exciting! He has FBCM, French Wheaton Marans, California White, Dominique, Barnevelder, Delaware, SLW, Leghorns, RIR, and Buckeye which we don’t yet have, and also Easter Egger, Olive Egger, Speckled Sussex, Buff Orpington, Salmon Faverolles and Sapphire Gem which I wouldn’t mind another one of! Any recommendations out of the extras I listed, in case we have a choice? I REALLY hope he has an extra French Marans! ❤️. I can’t technically increase our order in case everything hatches and survives, otherwise I would have ordered 2 French Marans already! (He has a 5 same breed minimum but he likes us so he said we could do 3 groups of 2…) 😊 I think it helps we always take a handful of extras when we pickup! Lol

I cannot WAIT to have chick babies again! Winter is crawling by….

Sad news today. One of our GLW, Butternut, (her feathers reminded me of the color of the inside of the squash), had been badly limping for a few weeks. She was unable to roost and had a hard time moving around the coop so my aunt brought her in the mudroom so she wouldn’t get picked on and have to fight for a spot at the feeder. Well, I think she might’ve been depressed from being alone, and she showed in her appetite. I could get her to eat a little scrambled egg, but she turned her nose up at everything else including wet mash. I could usually get her to eat a little when I went over but I have limited availability hours during the work week so I can’t sit and hand feed her all day (only after work) and my aunt is a bit more hands-off than I am. Poor thing was so weak from not eating that my uncle came and put her down. I feel terrible. The ground is too frozen to bury her.
