The EMERGENCY Thread!!!

Humptey-Dumptey closed her eyes and wouldn't open them but was still breathing for a couple days. I tried my best at what I could do but she end up passing away. But at least she's not suffering anymore

I'm so sorry to hear that you lost your Humptey-Dumptey. Sometimes no matter how hard you try or what you do, they just seem intent on dying and you can't stop it from happening. At least that has been my experience, unfortunately. Rest assured you did all you could, even if it was just to offer her comfort and let her know she was loved.

Not so much an emergency but i would like to know if anybody else knows what causes a hens face to turn black. I have 2 that do it. One has an almost constant black face but ive only had her a few days... i think it has something to do with heat and stress. Am i right?

Hopefully someone else will chime in.
Do they ever turn completely red?

I'm not sure to be honest, but my thinking it has something to do with her breed (genetics?)

Heat stress would make her more pale.

Beautiful ladies BTW

New Emergency

My chicken has an injury on her left foot and there was a lot of blood that we cleaned up. She has a wound that will most likely heal but we are very worried about the scales on her leg, or the lack of scales. They are falling of and are very rough to touch. I've posted some pictures that show the state of her scales. We have purchased poultry scaly cream but we have not been applying it regularly because she is always getting small wounds like this so not sure if it is safe or will sting her. What could be causing her scales to fall off? She is only 1-2 years old and otherwise very healthy. Thank you for reading!

YIKES! Have you treated her for scaly leg mites? That is what it looks like to me. If it is, it is easily treated. I just slather the hen's legs up good with vasoline, making sure you massage it well under the scales. You will have to check them over for creepy crawlies in general. I treat my birds with Ivermax drops. It comes as a pour on for cattle. I put it in a squeeze bottle and apply three drops under each birds wing for standard sized birds. You can also use Seven powder which is safe and effective. Make sure you spray your roosting boards also as they can become reinfected from mites living in the wood.

Good luck. Those feet and legs sure look sore.

@microchick We do have poultry scaly cream which is supposed to treat mites, although we have not been using it regularly. I think we also have housing spray which kills mites too. What does vasoline do, should we use that instead of the cream lotion? Unfortunately I didn't realise the problem was this bad, she must be in pain :(

Also, will her scales be able to grow back? She will sometimes peck the loose scales off herself, the skin underneath the scales on the foot are exposed.

Nu Stock. It is marketed for cat, dogs and horses, but someone advised me and I am forever grateful. Will grow back scales, skin, fur and feathers-even on wounds that appear fatal. You will not be sorry.
