The EMERGENCY Thread!!!

Here's photos. He's getting worse. Is there anything more or better I can do for him? The lump is effecting his eye more, and he's sometimes closing it. Seems the lump is moving upwards. Originally started low on his waddle. It is a very hard lump. (Between the purple hole - where I cut away the black scab - and his beak. The lump is directly under his beak now).

Your help is greatly appreciated. This boy is about 5 years old and was my alpha rooster until demoted by the fight that caused this.View attachment 1130644 View attachment 1130642 View attachment 1130643
What is the yellow coming out of his mouth?
Is that Canker?

My rooster is worse today. Can someone please advise me should I continue giving him penicillin or stop? He's had just one dose so far. I now wonder if it's inflammatory edema?? I cannot take him to a vet.....BYC has to be my vet.

Don't stop the medicine. It hasn't had the time to work yet.

If you squeeze that lump, does anything come out? It sounds like it may be an abscess, full of pus. It may have thickened up and not be easy to remove, and be thick and "cheesy". Does it feel warmer than the other wattle?

That wound area needs to be thoroughly cleaned 2X daily. Use alcohol or betadine or whatever you have access to in your country. If you can get something out of it you need to get into that pocket and flush it clean using alcohol or betadine or sterile saline. Again, do this daily. It is okay to remove the scab to get at it. An abscess needs to heal inside out (or it will simply fill back up!) so if that is what is going on, then it needs to remain open to heal and be cleaned.

Oh my. That purple lump is huge compared to the wattle. I would try something like bag bomb maybe. I don't know for sure if it'll work but it is a 50 50 chance

Update: I'm now in the middle of a fowl cholera outbreak citywide. I've lost 7 chickens over the last few days! It's definitely Fowl Cholera. One person told me of someone in our area losing 20 chickens in a day. :( I've had an enormously tiring day today....burying chickens, removing litter from the coop and run, medicating all chickens with penicillin, removing each chicken as it appears sick to isolation (then burying). I'm exhausted......all starts again tomorrow. I'm thinking the rooster must have fowl cholera hence the lump in his comb. So far he's still with us and bright and alert. We'll see what tomorrow brings. He's been on penicillin the longest. Also giving them Gentamycin in their drinking water.

Good to hear your hen is doing better :)

I need some help please with penicillin I bought today, Pendistrep LA. It has Benzathine benzylpenicillin 80,000 I.U., Procaine benzylpenicillin 120,000 I.U., Dihydrostreptmycin sulfate 200 mg base, and Excipient up to 1 ml.

The instructions state I can give this to chickens, and that I should dose at 0.25mls per 1 kg weight (so for my rooster who weighs 3.3kg I've dosed 0.83ccs), however, it goes on to say to only dose once every three days. It's this dosing once every three days that I want to check with knowledgeable others here please. And it doesn't say how many days I should medicate for.

My rooster got into a fight with another rooster of mine and was badly pecked on his waddle. I have removed the scab and he's left with a big piece of his waddle now missing. But, the big problem is that his waddle is very swollen, with a hard and hot lump which has moved up to under his beak. He's still eating, drinking and is perfectly ok otherwise. I've cleaned out the hole in his waddle under his beak, stuffed it with triple antibiotic ointment and given the above dosage of penicillin today.

Do I give another dose tomorrow or wait another 2 days?

Many thanks

Dang
You have a point!
From what I'm reading it appears to be a one time dosage and if symptoms persist to repeat after three days. IMHO- if symptoms persist after the follow up dose I'd consult a veterinarian

One thing I have noticed in all my searches.... poultry are not listed to treat with this antibacterial. I'm in the medical field but not a veterinarian- so I'm thinking or hoping you obtained this medication or idea to administer from a licensed vet?
