The EMERGENCY Thread!!!

I put about 7-8 peppercorns in their feed for 2 chicks. at the beginning they ate it all, later some were sitting there for 2 days. I guess they know how much they need.

I have 15 full grown chickens, I was thinking of making them some scrambled eggs with cracked peper sprinkled on. Is free choice peppercorns a better idea? Thanks

Thanks, I do need to get some eye wash because a few do have scabs close to their eyes :/ I have read that article about the iodine but it seemed like a bad idea because it is poisonous for human consumption. So isn't it poisonous to chickens? This is what my one hen looked like about a week ago

But they amount of scabs has easily more than doubled since that picture. Is it normal to get that much worse the first week? Ill try toget a recent photo up tomorrow

As you can see she is much worse. She also feels alot lighter when I pick her up and won't eat any treats. This has been going on since she first got sick. She runs around and acts fine but I'm worried she isn't eating Her beak is also cracked and a bit long

I'm not sure if that is contributing to the problem. Any tips on getting her to eat or fixing her beak would be appreciated.

she might eat eggs, they usually do. even whole peppercorns in their feed is free choice, they eat it only if they want it. sprinkled pepper over scrambled eggs sound good. chickens can eat black pepper any time, it is also good to prevent worms.

put betadine on her scabs. you can trim her beak a bit with nail cutter, it will regrow after a while. just trim it and leave it alone, no need of disinfection or anything else. start with trimming each side separately and when it gets better file it a bit.

Ok, thanks that all sounds good. I did see her eating later after I posted that. So I'm happy that she is still eating I think her appetite is just bad from being sick. I bought some kickin chicken which is a fat supplement to go on their feed. Hopefully that helps her get some of the weight she lost back on

Hi. I have a sick bird and am relatively new to raising chickens so am hoping this situation will sound familiar to someone on here.

My 1.5 year old easter egger has been laying and acting normal until today. A couple days ago we noticed her rear was soiled with what looked like runny poo. That happened to another of the hens, and then she started molting, so we thought that's what was up with this one. But today she is not eating or drinking, standing in the corner of the run fluffed up. Her back end is very goopy, and along with the nasty poopy stuff there is discharge that looks like egg yolk or clear mucous. Given her behavior we know now that something is wrong but don't know what it is or how to help her.

Any suggestions would be very appreciated. Many thanks in advance.

have you felt for an egg? Sounds very much like she has broken an egg inside of her or possibly an internal layer

Good news!
After soaking the gunk off her bottom last night, I was able to see that she had a leathery broken egg stuck in her vent. A combo of her pushing and me gently pulling expelled the rounded end, and all is well now. She is pooping normally and eating and drinking. I'm so glad. She's my favorite bird, and she was clearly in bad shape.

great news! Keep an eye on her and make sure she does not develop a infection. It is possible after having a egg break inside of her. Glad she is back to her normal self

New (kind of an emergency):

Hi all. I woke up this morning to find one of my girls acting lethargic which is about the only symptom. She is not really interested in food... i have only just got back to my chickens after a week or two so i don't know how long this behaviour has been going. She still looks fat and healthy though.

She is a black Australorp hen that has just turned a year old. Lays like the wind. Normal red comb, i can't really catch her to feel her over. I might be able to now that she is acting strange. Im thinking maybe it could be sour crop??? but i can't know unless i catch her. Any other ideas?
