My first guess is a toxin - possibly botulism. I am a duck person, but this sounds similar to what ducks do when poisoned. There is a sticky at the top of the duck forum for flushes. At this point, I would go with the charcoal slurry recipe (please read it, it is for food grade activated charcoal) to try to absorb toxins that may still be in her gut, and keep letting her drink lots of fresh water.

That's my first guess.

Hi I have an 11 month Silkie hen who has 7 week old chicks (now separated) She started laying again ten days ago and every day since is agitated, scratching and vocalising for about three hours before she lays her egg. She went 10 hours in distress in 40' heat but finally laid her egg on the way to the vets the other day! On vet advice I am keeping up the shellgrit and she is on a good layer mix now bit still eats the chick starter. What could be the problem it is hard to see her in distress every day. She has always been a prolific layer and never had a problem laying before going broody ten weeks ago.

It can take time for a broody to get back into the swing of things. I am assuming the heat you mention at 40 is Celcius(?) that translates to 104F in the states. That's quite hot. Make sure she is staying hydrated - if a hen is dehydrated it can be more difficult to lay eggs. Layer feed with oyster shell free choice and still eating some chick starter is fine.

If she is still in distress, re-contact your vet for additional advice or move her to a cooler area and add some electrolytes in her water for a day. Then give some poultry vitamins the next. It's so hard to determine what's going on, but dehydration would be my first guess.

NEW EMERGENCY) I have a I think a Bantam breed chicken her name is Humptey-Dumptey and just the other day I checked on my chickens and they were on the perch sleeping like normal including her then the next morning she was on the chicken house sitting down with her wing spread out so I knew something had to be wrong so I tried moving her but all she did was flop around trying to walk. I had to go to school at the time so I left her in the house. When I got home she had flopped out of the house into the run but was in the same condition except wet cause it had been raining. So I thought it might be a leg/foot problem considering she couldn't walk and she's had scaley leg mites before so I checked it out. I inspected her legs but couldn't find anything wrong besides a possible squishy bottom of foot. She drinks lots of water and I think still eats(notsurecauseshewonteatinfrontofme) her comb and wattles are still red and she seems to act normal-ish it's just she can't walk and she is now shaking and I don't think she's cold. I had poured hydrogen peroxide on her legs and feet just in case she had a cut and wrapped them up and separated her from the others. I end up unwrapping them cause she unwrapped one. Later on I found a what I think was a dot of blood on her leg but i didn't think this would affect her that much and especially since she's shaking. I think it could be either a mineral deficiency or something happened to her nervous system and made her paralyzed and shake. But she has laying pellets and oyster shells for calcium so I just DONT KNOW!

she's back with the other chickens now cause it does not seem to be a disease. But still in the same condition. Getting her some Gatorade to maybe perk her up I hope it works!! Oh and i gave her some Vet RX stuff to see if it would help I don't think it did. Please help I agree with @Amiga

If you can, separate her so you can monitor and administer supportive care. If you have vet care available that would be best.

Thanks for the info!! I do not think it is possible for her to have gotten glass in her foot or poisoned we haven't sprayed anything or anything of that sort and there's no glass around but who knows it could happen so I'll look into it. We gave her some chicken electrolytes and probiotics along with the other chickens too instead of Gatorade. So hopefully she might be better in the morning

Usually Botulism is from eating moldy, rotten or decaying feed or from a carcass and the maggots.

Chicken feed can easily spoil when wet. If you can separate her so you can give her extra care that would be good. Make sure she is drinking plenty of water.

Have you added any new chickens to your flock within the last 30days?
What treatment(s) - supportive care have you tried?
Is her crop functioning properly?
Has she been wormed?
Does she lay eggs - when was the last time she laid an egg?
Do you have a vet that you can take a fecal sample to for testing of cocci, worms and bacteria?
What does her poop look like?

I'm trying to go back over your original post to see if I can think of anything else. Does she act like she is in pain if you manipulate the wings/legs?
Feel of her abdomen - does it feel hard, soft, squishy, bloated, fluid filled, normal.

You mention that she is drinking a lot - is she still doing this? Check her crop first thing in the morning to see if it has emptied (before she has had anything to eat/drink).

If you haven't done so, separate her. Keep her warm and offer some poultry vitamins in her water. You can give her some chopped egg or tuna in addition to her normal food to see if she will eat.

It's hard to tell what's going on. Vet care would be best. If that's not possible, supportive care with some extra nutrients, monitoring her crop, food/water intake and her overall behavior will hopefully help.

What treatment(s) - supportive care have you tried? I've given her chicken elytrolytes and probiotics, Vet RX, and I have washed her feet with peroxide.
