The Evolution of Atlas: A Breeding (and Chat) Thread

So sorry to hear about your husband, hope he has a quick recovery. I had plans to try the ice water butt dunk on the next broody I have, wanted to see if it worked. Suspension in a wire cage works but is a pain.

I hope so, too. He isn't feeling well at all today. The doctor who did the procedure last Monday that caused all this was alarmed when he got the ER report and called and asked husband to come in today at no charge so he could check him out.

Wynette killed the first chick that hatched overnight, mangled the heck out of it. It was blue, too, darn it. Stupid first timers. Was hoping this wouldn't happen, but it wasn't pipped when I went to bed and I couldn't spend the night with her on the floor of a cage. Guess it's a good thing that Dottie, a seasoned mama, is broody again, so I put the other three cheeping eggs under her, but she's in the main coop. Will have to worry about moving her; that is, if she'll accept chicks, being broody less than a week. I can't imagine she'd kill one, but you never know, I guess. Wynette will just have to snap out of it and get back to business.

I really don't need this chicken drama right now.

Sorry to hear he isn't feeling well today. Hope everything goes well at the doctor.

Also hope Dottie accepts the chicks after they hatch. Tell the girls to cool down with all the drama....Mama doesn't need it now.

Thank you. Agreed, I'm all out of tolerance for drama right now. And in addition, am having to process all the garden produce by myself or lose it. Guess I could just throw it to the chickens and let them have some squash. I've frozen and cooked quite a bit in the form of sliced and blanched for future casseroles and baked into different zucchini breads and frozen as well. I have a fabulous recipe for Lemon Blueberry Zucchini bread that I have to freeze so I don't keep eating it, LOL. The tomatoes are still just beginning to turn one by one, but there are tons of green ones that will probably ripen at the same time--SALSA TIME!

Okay, Kelly and whoever is interested, here is my Lemon Blueberry Zucchini Bread recipe. I found one online, but I adjusted a few things. It wasn't orignally lemon, but I love the lemon flavor in there, more refreshing. And if you have someone who thinks he/she doesn't like zucchini bread, they won't even know it's in there, even though there is a cup of shredded zucchini in each regular size loaf. I love this one since I have both blueberries and plenty of zucchini growing.

Makes 4 mini or 2 regular size loaves.

3 large eggs, lightly beaten
1 cup vegetable oil
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 teaspoon lemon extract (for even more lemon flavoring, you could add a little lemon zest, too)
2 1/4 cups white granulated sugar *or for a more healthy version, reduce sugar to 1.5 cups and add 1/4 cup raw honey (I do the honey)
2 cups shredded zucchini
3 cups all purpose flour *if you use self rising flour, eliminate the next three ingredients*
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1 Tablespoon ground cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon nutmeg, optional
1 pint (2 cups) fresh blueberries (toss with 1 tablespoon flour, which helps keep them from all sinking to the bottom)

Preheat oven to 350*F and lightly grease 4 mini loaf pans or 2 regular size loaf pans (I like the baking spray that has flour in it).
In large bowl, beat together eggs, oil, vanilla & lemon flavorings and sugar (and honey, if using). Beat in flour, salt, baking powder & soda, cinnamon and nutmeg. Gently fold in blueberries. Transfer to pans.

Bake 50-55 minutes, or until knife inserted in center comes out clean. Cool 20 minutes in pan, then turn onto wire racks. (I usually just line mine with tinfoil and grease that, which turns over the edges and allows me to lift the entire loaf out by the edges, then I fold the foil down from the edges to allow it to cool).
