The Evolution of Atlas: A Breeding (and Chat) Thread

Yesterday, it was so warm and gorgeous outside, I had Tom wheel me to the chicken pen. That is not as easy as it sounds, have to get on the lift, be lowered down, do a very bumpy ride, avoiding tree roots and rocks, to get there, but we did it. I sucked in deep lungfuls of fresh mountain air and got some natural Vitamin D, held the very broody Cricket and the super sweet Bee, saw my Brahmas who are molting badly and just felt slightly more human. It's even warmer today, but will be getting back to the usual fall weather by tomorrow. At least some of my chickens know I'm alive.
Ripley is driving Tom nuts. She will fly up to the high, narrow shelf in the back storage area of the barn and lay her eggs there. Why, oh WHY? She is nutty, but very, very sweet. Why not sit her fluffy butt in a soft nest?? He's found several there. And a couple of days ago, when June and Aubrey and Mina were outside, he went to put them back in and found June facing off with Ripley, who had somehow flown out of her pen (it has plastic fencing over the top!). I guess she and June recognized each other as the same with their wheaten-like coloring and beards, LOL. If he hadn't gotten there when he did, might have been a hen fight, but I think Ripley would have lost since Mina is pretty cantankerous and would have jumped in to save the day. June may be almost 14, but she isn't a pushover, either!

Glad to see you got out and about a bit. Sunshine cures a multitude of ills- mostly within the soul!

Saw the ortho yesterday for the next to last time. Dr. Nuelle (pronounced Newley) said I was doing much better than he even expected, that it was a really bad break, but because of how well I'm doing, I don't have to go to physical therapy, to just keep doing my own therapy like I am. I see him again in 6 weeks, ostensibly for the last time.
In the meantime,
someone local has a brand new walker and shower chair they're selling together for about half the new price for just a walker and we're picking that up this morning so I can start putting more weight on my leg without fear of falling like I would with crutches. Won't be long before I'm back in the chicken pen with my favorite birds. Wish me luck! I can stand and sort of hop/shuffle on my bad leg, but not put full weight. If you consider that the front muscle was splayed open for almost 11" for surgery, it will take months for all the residual swelling to dissipate as well as all the bruising.

Today is our 46th anniversary. Helps to have married a strong, principled man who was a good, present father to our sons and vowed to never abandon his family. We still love and even like each other.
