The Evolution of Atlas: A Breeding (and Chat) Thread

Cynthia (speckledhen), My Cheyenne that I got from you last summer has decided to go broody on me, she is on day 4 sitting on 14 eggs. I tried to take a few away from her because I wasn't sure she could cover that many. She quickly told me otherwise, with her beak! May 14th will be day 21, I'll let you know what happens. I plan on candling at day 10 to see whats going on, hope Ty is the stud he thinks he is.

How exciting!! Wow! I'll have to tell Ladyhawk. She got the other New Hampshire that I bought at the same time as Cheyenne and named her Maggie. Wonder if Maggie will go broody, too?! Let me know when Ty is a daddy!

More pictures. First of all, the "what is it?" kid. I think with the wattles as pink as they are plus the comb getting there and the chick about to turn 7 weeks old this week, maybe we should call this a very beautifully barred single barred cockerel.

And one of the "pullets" is a bit more pink in the face that I want to see so I'm back to vacillating on her. I changed the ad to BR pair rather than trio, just in case. The other one has no pink at all, very definite pullet.

The other two chicks, plus Rocky.

Last, but not least, Atlas and the girls.

At what age do saddle feathers start to turn downward? Male or female, that is a beautiful bird. And Atlas is just :love :love :love (although don't tell Xander I said so!)

Usually, I can start to see the male saddle feathers coming in anywhere from 12-14 weeks of age. You can part the back feathers and see them starting to come in all pointy and shiny before they can actually be observed casually.

Atlas has filled out nicely, hasn't he? I sent his picture, among others, to Ladyhawk, and she didn't recognize him. She said she still thinks of him as a baby, LOL (take note, drumstick diva!)
