The Evolution of Atlas: A Breeding (and Chat) Thread

How do you track them down? Do you search using the photo's IRL?
There are programs that search for photos like Tin Eye, but mostly, folks just tell me or I see them myself. I'm sure there are many who've used them that I've never caught. There's also Google Images where you can search by URL or upload a photo and see where it is on the web.

I just googled my birds for this but you just click on the Buckeye thread part or Surving Minnesota thread.

Cyn what do you use to watermark your photos? I am gonna start watermarking mine I think. Just in case...

Mine turned out like this.

My photo program, Irfanview, has an "insert text" feature. It also has a watermark feature but I have to create the watermark somehow to use that. The "insert text" is what I do. I put a text box and put the text in it. You can change font type, size and color.

ETA: Apollo's kids with the Brahma broodies

2 1/2 weeks old:

And the younger ones, 1 1/2 wks old. At least one of these is a pullet.

ETA: This morning I'm ready to sell Apollo with Athena and put Zara back with Hector. I certainly have one or more of his sons here in this batch anyway. I am just tired of different groups right now. That would give me a reprieve from one group for awhile and I could take time to decide if I'm keeping a son of his. At least one of the chicks is a pullet, a good future mate for Hector. And, of course, I still have Atlas, which is good if his hens ever decide to lay again!

Mary, Lizzie's poop is still mostly water. She has been wormed very recently with the rest but that didn't solve it. She's been like this since her big molt. It never gets solid. Any ideas? She eats the same as all the rest of the flocks, but is the only one with this issue. Poor Atlas has to stand in lakes of her poop if she sits next to him on the roost at night, which was an issue in the cold nights we've had this winter.

I just spent 29 minutes of my life watching a group of terriers ratting a chicken farm in the UK. I could not stop watching! (graphic, if this stuff bothers you). They got over 400 HUGE rats in one weekend.

ETA, again: apparently, Carly's .9 oz egg from the other day was a whopper. Today's tiny offering weighs just .8 oz.

So I am sure you all remember we had to have our dog put down about a week ago now... Well... Yesterday we went to a local shelter and adopted a new dog! Meet Foxy! She is a *2* year old Husky/German Shepard cross. She came into the shelter from a "Dog Catch" in South Dakota. They dont think she has ever had a home before as she was scared to death of people when she came to the shelter 2 weeks ago. She now is loving her new home I think and is really settling down!

Our last rat terrier mix was mixed with Jack Russell and she was deadly to rats and other small varmits. I had watched her many times go in a grab and kill rats. She was quite the asset. Our current rat terrier mix is mixed with Chihuahua so the instinct isn't as strong, though she often tries to catch my muscovy ducks. I love rat terriers in any size or mix.

Very cool video. I like watching dogs doing what they were bred to do.

Isaiah, Foxy lucked out with her new home. Has she shown too much interest in your poultry? The Husky part of her may have that strong prey drive. She's a beauty! Makes me miss my girl, Kes (if you recall one of the Star Trek TV shows, Kes was an Ocampa, pretty blonde lady whose species lived to be 9 years old).

I have watched a few of those ratting videos. I guess that group is hired to come in and remove a colony. They sure do a bang-up job! I personally am not partial to those types of dogs and I really don't like Jack Russell Terriers, but it's amazing how good that bunch is! I saw on one, they had several breeds involved, though, not just the little terriers.

So, if I sell Apollo and Athena, I can hold on to Hector and get some chicks from him and see what he produces. I could sell him later, but that would be TBD at a later date.

One of the older BR chicks is very small. Though it has a male head spot, it is feathering more like a pullet. Could be it will catch up in size later on. The egg it came from was a good size egg, not a pullet-size, so that doesn't account for its size.

I have not brought her to the birds yet. Gonna let her settle down first. She is scared of any little thing that moves outside. I feel bad for the poor girl. I am thinking tomorrow or Friday. Most likely Friday when we aren't as busy. She is a such a chill easy going dog. Likes cats and hates chewing on stuff including her toys.

I dont recall ever seeing pics of Kes? What kind of dog was she?

They sure did do a good job! I would hate to be a rat with them around!

Sexing chicks can be quite a pain cant it? Hopefully its a pullet!
