The Evolution of Atlas: A Breeding (and Chat) Thread

I remember that Isaac hated the Stukel hens when he got them for a period of time. He preferred his own Delawares, red Rita and the bearded ladies. All the roosters always seemed to love the EEs and Ameraucanas for some reason. But, if I gave Maretta to anyone, it would be Hector. June is too old at going on 10 yrs old to have any rooster with her, IMO, plus she keeps prolapsing when she tries to lay so not good for a big guy to jump her anyway.

Got our very first egg today! From my favorite girl, Martha. And she even used the nesting box!

Sorry Atlas isn't treating his ladies well. Having never had a rooster I'm not sure what to do. :/

Atlas would be put in solitary confinement for a few months until he matures and calms down if he was here. I have no patience for that behavior out of young roosters, it drives me bananas. My 3 roosters from this year aren't quite mature enough yet, but in a few months the crazy lady with her fishing net may be rounding up boys who are naughty.

It can take up to 2 years before I can appreciate some roosters. I prefer my older boys. Sometimes one is a good boy from the start and others are terrors.

I remember the eclipse from the 70's, wasn't that impressive, so I'm wondering what all the excitement is about. I think everyone is a bit crazy about it.

The thing is, Atlas is not a young rooster. He's 3 1/2 yrs old, fully mature. He's a sweetheart to us, not a mean bone in his body. He does tend to be insistent in mating, though, at times, even with his older hens and he does not seem to want new girls for some reason. Goofball got stuck with one leg on one side of the bottom rung of the roost and one leg on the other when chasing Wendy around his inside pen yesterday. He was teetering for a few seconds and I was on my way to rescue him (and scold him) when he got himself off of it. Isaac used to make the Stukel BR hens stay away from special food until his own hens got what they wanted. He was very picky about his girls, though at one time, he had about 25 all to himself, and kept them all fertile, too. I said over and over to him, "Buddy, why do you hate the barred girls? Look at your own tail!" Why he was not thrilled with BR hens, I'll never know. He would mate them, almost grudgingly it seemed to me, like he had to, but he didn't really want to, LOL. Depending on what hatches from the Brahmas, he may get a furry-legged gal. We'll see if he likes her better.

The last eclipse must have been the year my younger son was born. He turned 38 this month.

Sorry to hear Atlas is being a bully to his girls. Hopefully it's just a phase.
I'm sure we have a fair amount in town for the eclipse as well. We are at 98% or so where I am in Missouri.

Congrats Kitkat on the first egg! I don't expect I'll get any eggs until close to spring unless they decide to start laying in the dead of winter lol. We shall see. My ducks started laying in winter when everyone told me they wouldn't start till spring. Ducks are great layers overall. I will miss them.
