The Evolution of Atlas: A Breeding (and Chat) Thread

PS: Tell me about the orange guard. Is it the regular one with limonene? I've wondered if it was safe to use around chickens as they're so sensitive to fumes but sounds like that's what you're using exclusively in the pens, cracks, etc.? I actually have some here but have never "really" cleaned out my chicken area. :oops: I used to spray some olive or coconut oil in the cracks along the walls, roosts, etc. in the little house on occasion. But have never cleaned since they've been the the pole building.

:caf

It is orange peel based. It has an orange scent, but it dissipates quickly. They've never shown any sensitivity to it. I spray it around the base of the floor where wallboard meets the floor, any cracks and crevices especially around the roost, plus all inside the nest boxes.

PS: Both you ladies have some nice looking husbands! :)

Thanks. He's a good man, couldn't ask for better.

@getaclue, I've never had a flu shot. I have refused flu shots, shingles and pneumonia vaccines and I'm getting tired of being asked to get them. They are not proven vaccines, IMO. Because the gov't gets 75 cents from every vaccine, it makes me too suspicious of them pushing them so strongly. I realize that with your condition, you have to be careful about your immune system, but we rarely ever get sick. Haven't had the flu in a million years, probably because we don't have a lot of contact with people. We've tried to build our immune systems as much as possible to stay healthy. My husband was forced to get shots all the time in the military, but thankfully, they couldn't make me do it.

It's been a TERRIBLE pest year for flies, garden pests, etc, so I guess this is just a continuation of that. And I really did expect that Snow would eventually get mites, being adamant that she will not dustbathe. Other than her and Amanda, who are crippled, all of the birds take luxurious dustbaths. I found Atlas deep in a hole just two days ago, so happy that he didn't move away when I bent down to run my hand down his back, LOL. I also think that ill birds are more prone to pests. And the bantams don't get out as much as the others do, but when they do, they are dustbathing fiends!

This is my first experience with mites, but I guess over a dozen years without them is pretty good. Even my crippled Zane never had mites or lice. I had to do everything for him and always kept his cage dusted with DE, but he also was living alone, not with other birds. The only time he really had contact was when Gypsy wanted to visit, or he was out on the ground with a broody and her chicks being Uncle Zane.

My first rooster, came to me covered in lice/mites and had favus as well. But those were taken care of in his quarantine period and he never had them again.

Getting a headache from the muscle strain. Guess I'll have to take something or suffer later tonight. We went to a feed store to get the poultry dust and they had some Wrangler shirts on sale. I got one for DH he liked that was marked down from $56 to $23. Even that is more than we usually pay but it's a really nice shirt. He put on his cowboy hat, too, but he should have put on his boots that he won at a western store giveaway grand opening.See? My man.

Wow, looking good!

@oldhenlikesdogs
I want some barn photos! :pop
I forgot, between my litter of baby bunnies I didn't want, though they are adorable, and now I caught a cold, probably at my doctor appointment last week, and debating another dog I totally forgot. My heads full, and busy busy.

After watching my aunt get shingles twice, and watching the agony it caused her, I will get a shingles vaccination as soon as my insurance will cover it. I used to get flu shots but got the flu every year anyway, as they are seldom for the strain that ends up being prominent that year. Or maybe they just don't work for me. Either way, I gave them up.

I had an uncle who got shingles. But, they say 1/3 of people who've had chicken pox get them. That means 2/3 don't. The odds are you will not get shingles. I think a lot has to do with your immune system, but that's just my theory. I've also heard of quite a few people getting the vaccine, then getting shingles because of it. I will play the odds. I don't trust all these new, and to my mind, unproven, vaccines. I don't trust that what's in them is what you think is in them. And they push them too much. Makes me push back and refuse them.

I hate when I stop getting alerts for watched threads. :p sorry you had to deal with mites and getting all the coops and chickens cleaned and dusted, that's a lot of work!

Our baby bunnies are 7 weeks old now which means they can go to new homes next week! 8 bunnies eat and poop a lot! We're going to keep one female to stay with her mom, we already rehomed the dad. I'm going to do a deep clean of their coop once the rest are gone and hopefully getting everything clean and disinfected will get Meri (mom) and Georgia (the baby we're keeping) will go back to pooping in the corner Meri always used before instead of the whole cage.

4 of our hens are laying now so we get 3-4 eggs a day which is just perfect. I eat 2 a day then just enough for whenever I need them for recipes. When the other 6 are laying I'm going to have to make eggs for everyone more lol.
