The Evolution of Atlas: A Breeding (and Chat) Thread

With DH's input, our almost 6 week old daughter (about 95% sure on that now, no wattles at all, no enlarged comb) of Atlas and Ida is now named Tessa. Her barring will not likely be as crisp and precise as Lizzie's but should be nice. Doesn't matter, though, since she will be with Deacon when she's old enough. She's such a love!

I still have a mystery Delaware from my spring hatching - just not sure yet, all the boys are BOYS and all the girls are obvious as well. Still waiting for a crow.

Delawares out of Isaac's line were always pretty easy to sex by 4 weeks old, sometimes earlier. My hatchery BRs were super easy. This line of BRs? Not easy at all. Tessa had a scattered head spot, not much dark down the legs (even my cockerels have a little sketchy dark stuff), so I tagged her as a male immediately. This is the only line where what I think is a definite male can turn out to be a surprise pullet. Happy about that, though! Proves Ida is not just a cockerel producer.

Wish I knew who Lizzie's mother was. She is as good looking as the original Stukel hens were at that age, though not quite as wide, probably due to being raised some of her life in a penned situation.

How wonderful for Deacon!! Happy you held on to that one!!

Can you send some of that pullet luck my way? I have a couple maybes that really need to be girls after losing 6 layers in their prime last month. I believe I have one pullet in my 8 week olds that survived the attack and I know three of them are cockerels. I also have 4 but probably 5 of 7 four week old chicks in my broody coop. I really need the little black one to be a pullet! One of the leghorn mix cockerels was crowing at 3 weeks!

I don't really have all that much "pullet luck". All three of the Belgian D'Anver chicks a week older than Tessa are cockerels.

I've had cockerels crow at a few days old, though the first time I saw it, I didn't realize what he was doing. It was adorable, just stood there, raised his head and let out this little, "Buh-REEEET!".

Yay!!! So happy for Deacon!!

Mini rant, sorry:

I LOATHE AND DESPISE BLUEGRASS MUSIC! ACK!

Okay, almost better now. Almost. My husband is learning to play the fiddle. I hate it. I like violin in an orchestra. I hate a single honky tonk violin in my livingroom. My head is pounding.

I have to admit while I loathe modern Country music I have a soft spot for Bluegrass - Love the Will the Circle Be Unbroken album with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and about every great BG musician of the time.

Right now, everything grates on my nerves more than usual. Generally, I am not a music listener anyway. I prefer quiet. But now, my stress level is way up, dealing with family stuff, and someone learning to play is just not helping. I know he loves it, but I can't stand it. If he plays in the basement, I can't even hear it, but he usually doesn't.

I hate country music of all kinds, including bluegrass, always have.
