The Evolution of Atlas: A Breeding (and Chat) Thread

I candled Wynette's eggs today, on Day 10. Well, I did 7 of the 8 and didn't want to bother her anymore. ALL seem to be developing just fine, including Tessa's and Lizzie's.

Ida is still clucking her head off but she isn't sticking to a nest. Every hen in that coop other than Wynette laid today.

Hopefully Wynette figures it all out.

The girls at the office are all 1. on diets (for health reasons) and 2. gluten free/nut sensitive - makes it hard to take stuff in.

I feel very fortunate that I can eat pretty much anything.

all goes well and you get your back-up Roo. I'm a firm believer in back-up roosters. I should share my husband's "pardoning" speech he wrote up after we sent our last group of extra roosters to a friends farm for "camp." It is lengthy, but hilarious. The best part is, it is all true. We made a last minute switch as to which rooster we were going to keep, after our original keeper started showing not nice behavior to the and our lead Roo, Blackbeard.

So cute!! And on our extra leap year day too!! Hmm… My horse's name is Valentine, because he was born on Valentine's day, but it is still February!! Valentine rhymes with Clementine! Or… maybe Darling? Like.. "Oh my Darling, Oh my Darling, Oh my Darling Clementine."

We decided to name him... Brock! Hes a Brockel face baldy so the name fits!! Here is a newer pic!

@holm25 Congrats on the new guy! Good name.

Ida has tried to steal Wynette's eggs several times though I don't think she's been on a nest overnight yet. I put six eggs in a different nest and moved her big bum over there so she may not bother Wynette so much, but I have no idea if she'll stay on them. We hope to have them all moved to the new barn within a week or so.

Wynette on her eggs. Ida stole them today, but still, Ida would not stay on others I gave her. Crazy hens.

Ida tried her theft again. I took her egg she just laid and moved her to the nest with it. At roost time, she's still there so I have two clucking fools. Wynette is on Day 14 tomorrow. Ida, well, she has her own egg and one of Tessa's and if she sticks to the nest, I guess she'll hatch them. BUT, ominously, I think I hear Tessa clucking, too. What the heck will I do with all these girls in the same coop broody? Poor Atlas!

Since I have yet to experience the joys of a broody hen...lol Does Ida take Wynette's eggs while she is sitting on them or does she wait until Wynette gets up to eat? I know Ida is big ole girl but if she takes them from Wynette while she is still on the nest, that is pretty amazing.
