The Evolution of Atlas: A Breeding (and Chat) Thread

@h2oratt Marvin Stukel himself is in Arizona. He's closer to you than me. Surely someone knows of him and his stock in your area. In my humble opinion, the Stukels are the best BRs in the country. The late breeder who was also a BYC member for awhile, Bob Blosl, said that my original Rex was probably the best BR cockerel he's seen in a decade, and sadly, he was gone not long after he told me how to breed back up to what I had when Rex was killed by the copperhead. These are quite rare, hard to locate, I realize, but Mr. Stukel is only a hop, skip and a jump from your area.

Hmmm guess I will do an internet search.

I'm familiar with the article. This is the part that applies to the BRs, though the information may be outdated, this being from years ago. Anyway, it shows what a nice line he has. You can also see some if you do a search on YouTube for his name, birds others have posted of his.

Marvin Stukel 1983 North Paint Pony Lane Cochise, Arizona 85606 (520) 826-3078. Here is a sleeper cell of great barred rock large fowl. Last year I saw a trio of large fowl birds brought to a show in Pensacola Florida from Marvin’s home and this trio was big and had great color. Marvin has been breeding this line of birds from Glen Holgerson old line that had a great strain of birds 30 years ago. Marvin has bred them to the standard of perfection, but never shows his birds. Marvin also has a great strain of large fowl white Rocks that he has been breeding for over 30 years that are Glen’s old line. I do not know if Norman can supply you with eggs or chicks or even ship you large fowl. But if you have someone who could stop buy his home and get you a started it would well be worth your time. Or make a trip and drive down to his home and pick up your start of birds. The trio of Barred Large Fowl that I saw last fall where as large as my large fowl white rocks which are big.

Here's one:

Well, good grief. I've had three eggs from the Belgian D'Anver pen, I assume all were Aimee's since she's my best layer in there (that's not saying much). The last egg I got this morning, and now, she's been on the nest all day. Hard to tell if Aimee is broody because she is never cranky, doesn't scream or cluck, just stays on the nest overnight and I know she's broody.

I don't want any more D'Anvers, but if one hatched, I could find a home for it with a guy at the feed store who raises bantams, I think, just give it to him. I'm not sure they're fertile. The first one did not appear to be. So, I'd have to give her an insurance egg in case those did not hatch. All the Brahmas eggs are pretty big and Aimee is a little thing, not my largest D'Anver hen-that would be her daughter, Mina. At least, she could raise them in the D'Anver pen because they do very well with chicks, generally. Spike loves babies, or used to, if he hasn't gotten too old and crotchety.
