The Evolution of Atlas: A Breeding (and Chat) Thread

95 today and tomorrow and possibly sunday. So I spent the day doing everything I can to keep my chickens alive (LOL) in this heat. I spend a lot oftime with them to make sure everyone is okay. They hang together under a tree so I wet it down in the morning. They got watermelon. The 2 silkie hens also got dunked in a bucket of water to cool them off. Silkie hens do not take hot well. When they pant too fast, they get held in a bucket of warm/cool water until saturated. It helps a lot. I can't work on my pen because it's too hot, and I need it up by mid august so I can go to NY. Even my horse was soaked! Never saw that in Florida! Kind of odd I think. I've had to change my clothes several times a day because they get soaked.
I may have to advertise for a handyman. I just can't get it all done.

I have this terrible itchy rash on my underside forearms. It does not seem to go away quickly but I have not seen more in a week. I've tried everything, 3xabx ointment, caladryl, benedryl, and (don't laugh) even horse fly spray. Nothing changed. So I have an appt with a very good dermatologist Wednesday. Over the bridge into Louisville, something I never get tired of. I can even maneuver some of the city.

My little historic town, Corydon In. is 4 miles away. They always do things like music on their town square in the evening or like today the market from 4-7pm. Nothing special but I did get some baked goods and veggies. And we all appreciated the watermelon. I absolutely love being near a "real" small town that's a few walkable blocks, BUTT Drugs, (we park in the back) LOL. Antiquing, and a nice coffee café. They have local wine tasting all the time.
I really can't explain or compare this area to anywhere I've lived. It is like G_d's country. All around me is fields of hay or corn, cows, windy roads that go up and down hills, maple trees and very very green. The city is 20 minutes away. Walmart, supermarket, and common restaurants and walgreens and tractor supply are outside the little town. It's an ideal place to live, mostly. I'd like more trees on my property, LOL

I have one problem child. Psycho is a Houdan hen, estimate 5-6 years old, loves to be held but will peck and attack me. Went thru the spring wanting to follow me everywhere and loved snuggling. Well she's been getting her poof feathers pulled out and now has a giant bald spot covering most of her head and it's started to grow feathers back because I separate her at night. During the day I've seen her offer her head to several hens and they pluck feather shafts out and she bleeds. I just don't know who to pen her with. I can't get tape to stick to her head. She gets along with everyone in the main flock (silkies and Polish and 1 BO) but friggen offers her head to several! I don't know how to manage this. Any advice?

Here's a pic of a couch quilt I made when I quilted . It's gotta be over 15 years ago.

No suggestions on your weird hen. I have Tiny and I never could figure her out. She loves attention, is like a baby with me and on occasion will let Tom hold her, but she will also bite and flog him for no apparent reason. She's 9 years old, amazingly. I say "amazingly" because she's attacked his face a few times and literally been tossed across the room for it.
Beautiful quilt. I'm working on this one now and you may recognize some of the fabrics in it, Karen.
