The Evolution of Atlas: A Breeding (and Chat) Thread

This is the first time with the shots. They say if they help, the relief could last a year. I hope something helps. If it doesn't, they'll talk about more drastic measures.

:fl

Am I crazy? I'm thinking of giving Brandy four or five eggs.

Of course you are crazy. That doesn't mean you shouldn't do it.

I did and I *am* nuts, and she has seven eggs. And she's as calm and content as can be. This is her calling in life, more so than any other hen I've ever seen. She's eating and drinking from the nest, such a good girl, my Brandy. She doesn't growl or scream at me. Now, if it was Bonnie, she'd be trying to take my hand off all the way until after the chicks were eating and drinking and running around. I am happy that a few have never had the inclination....B.J., Bailey and Betsy have never shown broody tendencies, but Brandy and Bonnie have more than made up for it. And Cora has been broody a couple of times, but I never let her have eggs.

The fly strike guy, put him in a tub of water. The larvae will leave or they'll drown, just let him soak in a warm bath for a bit to get the ones close to the surface off then pick others out that you still see. Poor guy, did he have a wound?

I hate poison ivy. Takes a vegetation killer to get rid of it sometimes. People keep saying spray with a salt and vinegar solution but that never worked for me.

Thanks, i'll try it. So gross!
I find in the summer my chickens drink so much water that their buts get dirty real fast from looser poop. There is no wound the flies got into. Some people think that there's something else going on that attracts flies to do that.

Karen, when Suede was going downhill the last couple weeks of his life, his poop was green and runny and he ended up with the beginnings of a sore, which led to a minor fly strike. This was at the end of summer-he went downhill over a 2 month period, starting in July. I knew what to do because it happened to one of his daughters that Ladyhawk owned, but hers was much much worse, had eaten into her body cavity--those feathers hide a multitude of things. Her vet, my long-distance chicken consultant at the time, told her what to do first, which was submerge her to encourage the larvae to abandon ship. So, I did that with Suede and it worked fine, slathered the area with I think Silvadene cream, can't remember. This was 2012. So, it happens and it's hard to catch sometimes.

I understand. I notice the stool has a way different odor. I snipped off whatever I could. I had powdered and sprayed him with sevin, and left him overnight. The next day I made a strong Epsom salts water in a bucket and soaked his bottom loosening the rest of the dried on stool. When completely clean, I did notice 2 very small round holes but did not look raw or anything. The maggots were very small so I'm hoping it was starting rather than being there a while. Then I coated the area with ichthammol so the flies wouldn't bother him.

My first fly strike was Henrietta who I knew for a time had egg peritonitis. I cleaned her up and she did die a few days later. Backyard necropsy showed thick yolk stuff.
My 2nd was a very fat JG hen and by the time I noticed, it had grown into her underside cavity and I put her down.

My roo is acting better. I figure I'll check his underside tomorrow. Silvadene sounds good. I used what ever I have on hand that's antiseptic

I've been working real hard to build this 16 x 16 foot pen-totally safe because I'll be going to NY on the 16th, and between my handicap husband and my daughter stopping by every day, I want to make it as turn key as possible. The chickens will have open doors into pens with their water outside. Food inside. But very little to be done. Today I started hanging wire fencing . Hubs is putting 3 doors together. But it's 90 degrees out for days and it's going slow.

My chickens were all alerting last night close to dusk, and the crows were also fussing around the back of the coop. The woods come right up to the back of the run, and someone must have been nosing around. But that pen is built like Fort Knox, and I love the peace of mind that a secure coop/run gives you. I finally hollered out the back door and whatever it was moved along.

that's great 1muttsfan. good for you! These past few weeks I have been working hard in creating my Fort Knox-pen. The weather has not been making it easy. I do about 2 hours in the morning, then it's too hot, then after 6pm I try to do more. I have to have this finished by Thursday because I'm flying to NY for a few days. I'm asking my barely walking husband to walk back there once a day to check water and look for dead bodies (LOL) and my daughter to stop by daily and check water and food. I'm making the pens sturdy so no one has to lock them up at night. I'll put ample waterers all near where they can be refilled easily. I figure 2 people and ease can be done to feed and water the pack. My daughter loves playing with the juniors, 3 BR's and 4 Houdans. I swear that that last bunch is the friendliest most affectionate I've had. They are almost 12 weeks old.
Just a laugh here, a few Polish hens and a silkie roo have been annoying the juniors, and I guess what they don't realize is how big the BR's are going to get!
