The Expecting Chick Momma Thread

Question, about how to manage chicks with my flock. Still thinking about adding to my flock. If I get chicks do I keep them inside like I did the hens I have now, or will the hens take them in as if they were hatched by them? And will my rooster accept them since they will be so small? I'm really wanting to get some more but concerned about how they would be received by the others.

mamajo-- I LOVE that video-- just made my day. :) you will want the chicks to be fully feathered out before you take them outside. There will be some pecking-- the chicks are newcomers. Look around on here, there are some great articles on introducing new chicks. :) What I'm doing is separating some of the run, and have my Big Girls see my chicks, but they can't get to them.

If you get chicks you won't want to put them with the rest of your flock because they will get picked on. If you have a broody hen or two you could try and give the chicks to her at night. But there is no guarantee she will take care of them as her own. It depends on the age of the chicks you want to get. Day olds - about 4 weeks need heat lamps and no access to outside. And the rooster most likely will not accept the chicks.

My hatch/ship date is tomorrow! Eeek! I'm soo excited!

Ok, I admit it, I clicked the button...

Mcmurray had a last minute short sale on chicks from canceled orders due to the storm. I kinda ordered 25.

I have one brooder ready and the other just is waiting for DH to clear out and clean a big bin. I am dreaming about chicks now. :D I ordered the brown egg layer assortment pack so I wonder what I will get...
