The Expecting Chick Momma Thread

My first chicks came in today! 7 silkies from Ideal Poultry! They're soooo tiny and precious! All doing great so far! Next week I have 8 Cochins coming in from Ideal Poultry as well. Then May 22nd I'm getting my layers (Barred Rocks) from Country Hatchery in Wewoka, OK. I'm beyond addicted :)

Greetings!

My six chicks (all different breeds) went in the mail today.  My Pet Chicken is in CT, so I am hopeful that the chicks will arrive here on Long Island tomorrow!

Did you get your chicks? Are they healthy? I have 6 coming next week from My Pet Chicken. What breeds did you pick?

The middle of June I can get mine. I can't wait! I am getting a road island red , amiracana , silkie , and a buff orpington. I am soo excited no matter how long I have to wait. =D

I can't believe we ordered our chicks 4 months ago and they're arriving in just a few days! This weekend is all about setting up the brooder for 11. We were hoping to finish off the coop/run but we got some freak Spring snow...in Arkansas! Craziness!

kortmom,

I thought my chickies came from Connecticut, but evidently they flew out of Cleveland to JFK, then drove to my town. They arrived the morning of the second day. When the woman called from the post office, I could hear the cheeping through the phone! They were all so excited at the post office!

I ran to pick them up and all six chicks were in a box that was about 10" x 8". About five inches high. They were cheeping so much! It was so exciting!

I feared - actually I assumed that at least one chick would not have survived the trip, but when I got them home and checked, they all looked fine! Once I put them in the brooder (a large Rubbermaid container) I examined them more closely, and one - the white crested blue polish - was smaller than the rest, and one eye was stuck shut. She was also lethargic.

I noticed that she did not look like she was drinking, so thanks to all the good advice here, I pushed her beak into the water and she drank. But I did not see her eat.

By the next morning, her eye was open and she was eating and drinking with the others. Yeah!

I got six chicks in total - the polish, a barred rock, a buff orpington, a buff brahma standard, a dominique and a golden laced wyandotte. The only ones I can identify are the buff orpington - which is a yellowish color, and the polish, as she has a puff on her head.

If they were born on Sunday, they are one week old tomorrow. Their real feathers are coming in, and I can see how much they grow every single day. These babies grow fast! Tomorrow I will have to figure something out with the brooder, as I fear they will be able to fly right out. Right now I have no top on it - I could not find a screen or anything like that. So tomorrow I will figure something out.

Along with their medicated feed, I have given them hard boiled egg, scrambled egg, yogurt, kand today I gave them some oatmeal. They went wild for the oatmeal. It was like they were in some sort of frenzy, running around with oats in their beaks. It was hysterical.

I brought them outside today. I brought the entire brooder out and put it in the sun for a little while. It was around 80 degrees in the sun, but they seem to be no worse for wear.

Oh, the polish had a teeny tiny bit of poop by her vent, so I cleared it off with a moist paper towel. I check all their butts twice a day. Perhaps I am obsessive. : )

Oh, another thing. I empty a capsule of probiotics over their food each morning.

Oh, one more funny thing. I re-filled their food bowl at one point and walked away and when I came back, the buff orpington (named Carmelo, after Carmelo Anthony) was sitting in the food bowl taking a dust bath. She was shwishing the food all over her and of course, out of the bowl. Cracked me right up. Perhaps I should add a little dust bowl for them.

Let me know how you make out when your chicks arrive!

The babies are hatching!!! Two out and another zipping! 11/14 had pipped but one of the chicks knocked an egg over so I won't be able to tell if it's pipped until it's already zipping. That's fine because it's 11pm so when I wake up tomorrow, I expect several more to have hatched. I will stay awake until the zipping egg has hatched though. :)
