The Expecting Chick Momma Thread

My game chicken went broody on a clutch of unfertilized eggs (my BR cockerel tries but failed lol). Got some fertile eggs (7) under her today! Guess the countdown begins. Chicken math is catching up to me.

Finally some photos!! Babies are day 2.5 here, so maybe day 4 of life?

We've named one to date :)

1) Miss Julia Grant. We think she is an EE! Full of spice and vinegar and totally bonded to one of the RIRs.

2). Our other EE

3) RIR with darker spots on her back

4. RIR with lighter spots on back

5. the "runty" one, a BR. she is just a little quieter than the others and seems behind in her feather development. she's got a darling yellow spot on her left cheek :)

6. another BR also with a large white spot on head

7. our last chick! another BR with a smaller white splotch on her head

I have a broody hen that I could not cure. I tried every trick. finally after 3 weeks I was afraid she was going to die. wouldn't stad up. wouldn't eat. just laid there day and night.
so I gave in and got her some chicks. they were the last of the season, half price and not new babies. they have fully feathered wings.I had to work in the evening so rather than sneak them under her at night I took one out and just gave it to her. she sat up. opened her eyes and chirped and purred. it was so precious. so I went and got the rest and when I came back to the nest she actually attacked me. wouldn't let me near her baby. I tossed the rest to her, and now she is the happiest, most attentive momma chicken I ever saw. she actually pushed each chick up to the waterer to drink and stood over them not letting any run off till they drank the water. she has no clue that they already know how to live. she doesn't let one out of her sight for a minute. sooo cute :)

Ill get some pics of my two they are so adorable mumma hen is being a better mum now finally pecking me if i go near her chicks! Phew

She wasn't protective and would sometimes let other chickens peck them to the extent where i had to take her out!

My babies arrived Late Tuesday afternoon! Whew! All arrived safe and sound and I am now the proud momma of 16, YES 16 baby chicks! 6 Bared Plymought Rocks, 5 Speckled Sussex, and 5 (at least I think 5) Rhode Island Reds! There are two of the RIRs that are marked close to the same as the Speckled Sussex, except a bit lighter in the dark coloring. So time will tell as the grow!

We have named one so far! She is the Runt of the Bared Playmouth Rocks.... as soon as her tiny feet hit the floor of the brooder she took off ZIPPING all over the place for a about 30 seconds or more..... so she is now called "Zippy"!

Sounds like you've got quite a handful!! :)
Love the name Zippy, so cute.
You should get some pictures on here! :)

I'm afraid my chickens are becoming like my fish: the first few I named and the more I got, the less names I could think of! I still name the ones with the loudest personalities, though. :)

Well today was more eventful than we needed it to be. Our RIR with light spots (named Ms. Eleanor Roosevelt) has a gimpy leg :( it isn't spraddled, but she is not weight bearing on it and is acting very pathetic. They were extremely rambunctious this morning after round 2 of yogurt so I'm hoping she just tweaked something. She's in an isolation bin to avoid being harassed and she's doing okay with it so far. Still eating and drinking.

Really hoping she looks better tomorrow :/

And I am 90% positive one of my BRs is a roo- he is WAY behind the others in feather development and he's looking pretty darn dusky :p

I have a order with Meyer for 2 polish, 1 Cochin, 1sultan, 1EE, 1 golden Campine, 1 welsh harlequin, 1 Cayuga, & 1 blue Swedish all females for aug 5. I'm thinking about adding another polish, buff Orpington, & pekin. 2 months left, I'm getting very excited!
