The Expecting Chick Momma Thread

Waiting is so hard! I ordered my babies for the week of June 9th from Murray, but I thought it was a week and a half away... Turns out I had my dates mixed up and I had I wait 2 + 1/2 weeks :(

Now they're here and 2 weeks old :) I love my 6 BLR Wynadottes, 2 BL Polish and my mystery chick (Buff Cochin)

Not so mysterious, are we, buff cochin.

I am sooo excited since my chicks were shipped out yesterday and I should be getting them this afternoon. Out of my 12 selected chicks, my Sultan did not work out. MPC called me first thing yesterday morning and asked what substitution I wanted, so I picked a buff brahma. Hopefully the little guys tolerate the hot weather since it is to get above 95F today. I will take pictures when I get a chance.

Sorry about the sultan, did they say what happen? I have a sultan coming 7/08. What else did you get?

I asked what happened to my sultan and the customer service lady said she does not get a reason from the hatchery. I was offered 6 different types to choose from, some I already ordered so I got a buff brahma. My chicks came this morning around 1030 so I quickly went to the post office and I could hear them chirping away. I waited until I got home to open the box and all where standing except one. She cannot stand and just lays on her side or rolls onto her back. I called MPCs right away and she thought it was a weak chick. I gave it sugar water and plain yogurt and still no improvement. I also read from here to put her in a coffee mug to keep her upright. I believe it is my Australorp chick so I hope it makes it.
Does anyone here have any suggestions?

Hi everyone! I got a gift certificate to Cackle Hatchery for my 30th birthday from my family. I ordered 25 baby chicks from them; 10 assorted silkies, 10 easter egger bantams and 5 buff brahma bantams. They arrive July 23/24th. YAY! I also ordered 10 guinea keets (5 lavender and 5 dark purple) from a local feed store and have had them for 4 weeks now. They are outside for the first time (in a covered run) and peeping happily! MORE YAY!

We built an A Frame wooden coop for them with a completely fenced in run that should house them all even in winter. Then...I just accidentally ordered 6 buff silkies from the local hatchery, meaning we need a BIGGER house for them, especially in winter. I want them to have plenty of space to walk around indoors during harsh Wisconsin winters.

We raised the keets in a plastic storage bin in the bathtub with a heat lamp. They grew sooooo fast!!!! It was amazing! It has been 4 weeks and they are almost fully feathered!

Cannot wait to get my chicks though-

Wondering about my chicks; 6 are arriving at the end of this week (June 29th) and the rest will arrive July 24th. Can they still live together happily, is there a way to raise them together, or introduce them into the coop, etc?

Loving this forum, especially all the chicken pics!!!

I picked up my second order of chicks today, and all 4 EE are healthy! I lost one yesterday morning out of 12 I ordered, so I did well. MPC experience was great and I received my chicks within 20 hours of shipment both times. Now I am done, 16 chicks and 6 call ducklings, now the fun begins......

I am starting a new flock for my urban backyard in a few weeks! As a first time flock keeper, I am a bit nervous. Here is my line-up for egg layers ordering from mypetchicken.com:
3 assorted feather-legged bantams, 1 Appenzeller and 1 Blue Ameraucana. My intention is to have a mix of small, friendly pets with egg producers. I am getting overwhelmed with the different feeding suggestions. Any expert advise on how to start the chicks would be great!

Congrats! I thought you might be interested to know that any time I've ordered multiples of an assortment from them, if I get under give, they arrived as all the same breed. If you want every chicken to be different, I would recommend also getting one of the non feathered feet bantam assortments and perhaps pick out a third assortment or single breed to fill out the order. I too love that it is cheaper to get from the assortments (especially for sexed bantams, my god!) but if you want a variety it might be worth the couple extra dollars to pick it out specifically. :)

So far as food goes, a lot of people just grab a bag of non-GMO starter and if you're feeling confident, you could ferment that (which is super easy, it just SOUNDS intimidating) and you're set! :)
Best of luck!! :)

If I get under give = if I get under five****

Oh and congrats on locking in that blue Ameraucana! Took me ages of stalking the sight before I was able to snag one up! It arrived in Splash color which I do not mind. :)
