My 2 month old clutch still want to sleep in the sleeping cages I put them in as chicks.
Last night I closed them up and helped the birds onto the complex of 5 large perches.
I went in tonight to lock the birds up and they were mostly on the perches.
Then I made a horrible discovery. One of my big, beautiful white pullets who I am growing out to be one of Wingman's future brides was hanging lifeless from a perch.
She somehow got that space under her beak, near the neck, stuck on the tiny stump of a twig.
She them fell backwards off the perch and her own weight must have pressed her throat against the large branch, until she suffocated. The base of the beak was bloody, showing that she tried to struggle.
Such a freak thing. I will be scrutinizing all perches tomorrow for any sign of a twig stump.

I'm done experimenting and I now have a flock of Florida Whites and a flock of Florida Golds.
The Crown Prince is still a youngster. He'll gain another 4 pounds or so.
