The Front Porch Swing

I was going to PM you anyway because I just went to check my mail and received your package. It totally made my day - the pysanky eggs are unbelievably beautiful! My 9 year old son said that they were "like little miracles".

Good morning! I hope everyone is doing well this fine morning!

Good morning! My son are having a late breakfast and then heading out to meet someone to deliver BLRW chicks and a pair of Olandsk Dwarfs. I have a hard time letting go of the ODs, but I can't keep them all and the only way I can sell a cockerel is if it's with a pullet.

What does everyone do with your extra bantam cockerels? We process our large fowl, but the lil boys are just too sweet!

I have a couple of bantam cockerels and I am wondering the same thing. But honestly not because they are sweet...I am afraid to leave them in with the rest of the chickens because they are like little piranhas. They have napoleon complexes and keep going after the other chickens! but they are rather cute. I just wish they would chill.

We hatched a frizzle Cochin and what looks like a dark brahma, both bantams, and wouldn't you know it BOTH BOYS! Have to wait to see what we will do with them since they are till in the brooder. They are almost as cute as the Buttercup Bantams otherwise known as Mini moose. Now those things are adorable! Got them for the kid, but you know I like those midgety types of things. Can't help myself.

I do like bantams, but I wish they could be all hens....LOL

I was just looking at one of the online chicken shows. we all have our personal preferences but I am coming to the conclusion that I am weird. I don't particularly like things that other people love and breed for.

example: feathered feet. they just end up dirty and messy looking. send me your clean-footed marans any day! (love the dark eggs!)

and another example: Frizzled. they look like someone electrocuted them. I like feathers to be all in line and shiney...glistening in the sunlight with iridescence.

and speaking of iridescence, why no purple? I love purple! beetle green is fine, but purple iridescence is gorgeous too!!!

and another thing...perfect straight combs are boring. I want mine to have some character!!! a little wiggle is cute.

I totally agree on all of the above. My Arkansas Blue hen that is black has the purple iridescence instead of the beetle breed that my Sumatra had, and I think she is beautiful. I'm not sure what I am going to do about my cochin bantams because of the feathered feet. We have too much clay mud here when it rains. They will be carrying around piles of mud and other things. Yuck! Those must be designed for purely cage chickens and not anything that ever hits the ground. I want more chickens like my mini-moose as Flocks calls them. They are self-sufficient and love to forage. They stay nice and clean. I have never pulled a poopy or muddy egg from their pen.

I love my bantam Cochins, but I also hate the nasty mess on their feet after rain. I have a few project birds that I just love-I put a mottled bantam Cochin over an Olandsk Dwarf. All the offspring are beautiful. They kept the black and white mottled pattern with a sleeker look than the Cochins. They have feathered shanks (light) and very sparse if any feathers on the outer toe. It's awesome - no nastiness on the feet!

Not feeling well today. Cant let myself wander too far away from the loo. crampy. y'all need to talk more to keep me entertained (stamps foot)
