We are sorta battling some sort of predator...we don't know what, either Coyote with cubs or a fox. Husband heard them yipping.
We have lost two hens in broad daylight in the last two weeks so far. just gone...no blood or feathers. I think they went beyond the fence on the lower part of the property so we have ordered some chicken net fence from premier to keep them from going there.
And we got out the coyote trap and put a sebright rooster in it as bait. I didn't realize that was why they made the back of the coyote trap a removable cage...because you can use live bait in them. The cage is very strong and has very close bars...so he should be safe but he could use a little attitude adjustment anyway if he is going to stay around. He is so mean to the other chickens that we have named him "Little Hitler"... I don't even put him in the coop at night...it is too cruel to the other birds. so now he is at camp Coyote bait.
We had one of my friends over Friday night for Dinner...the one that I gave a dozen chickens to right before I found out that I had MG in my flock? well, I had told her about losing Sam (goat) and she showed up with a baby goat in her arms. so now we have a baby goat who's so small that he sleeps in the hayrack. So today I spent the day trying to make it so the chicken houses were goat proof...and I am still not sure that he can't get into them, he is so small. I think anything that could let a chicken through, he could get through, too. I am flummoxed.
tomorrow I start on the banty coop and weedwack the fenceline. need it to be not shorting out anywhere.

Girls can you help me?? For those that know my hatching record this year you know Ive had the most pathetic turn out;( this has never happened to me...is it possible that if the temps of the bator were super low the first week or so the chicks WILL actually hatch out a week later?? My 6 eggs were due on the 6th...nothing!!! So today is day 24 i cracked one open a tiny bit and used a flashlight to spy through the tiny hole!! A live moving chick!! I put a small piece of tape over the hole...moved onto the next egg...same thing!!! I never touched the other 4 for fear of really screwing this up but seriously...this has happened to me ever since I started hatching this year...what does hatch ...90% roosif it werent for CPL sending me female CCL chicks With some roos Id have hardly any females!!!
husband is willing to shoot it but not willing to sit out for days in a tree...LOL I really don't blame him. he is not a hunter AT ALL and just has guns for target shooting. he had to kill a rabid raccoon once and was so upset. he's a softy.Ugh Im so sorry...day predators are the worst!!! Sniper set up in a tree???
