The Front Porch Swing

Awwww! I'm glad that chick got up and running!

I'm thinking I might give Bug ... and all the other chicks ... some liver. All kinds of vitamin and mineral imbalances can cause leg problems. Liver has a lot of nutrition and is pretty common chick supplement. And of course FF is awesome.

I think Bug will be okay. S/he is walking around a bit and drinking water today and has pooed a little, which I think is a good sign. S/he has eaten a tiny bit of chick food: scrambled eggs and FF with a little nutri balancer and nutritional yeast ... and seems to be getting stronger and more active as time passes.

I wish Bug had a buddy, but I want all the others to get as normal a start in life as possible. They tucked right into their FF chick food this morning.

The Delaware chicks ... le sigh ... their foster hen is so busy flinging the deep litter everywhere with her scratching that she buries all the food dishes. I don't know that they've eaten any of the chick food. They just dive into each new crater she digs and peck, peck, peck.

I'm still drop-jawed about the Freedom Mutt hatch. That one little hen on 19 eggs ... that I know of! and all but one was fertile and hatched! and only one "late" or "weak" chick!... and we didn't know she was there at all until she appeared with the birds. I've read about this kind of thing before, I just never believed it could happen to us.

I'm particularly pleased with the fertility ... we've got about 20 hens per Roo in the laying flock.

I'm sure the novelty will pass soon enough. But right now we are feeling amazed.

Good, I'm glad he is moving around more. That liver will be good for them. I bet they will inhale it. lol That is a dang good fertility rate.

Well im ready for bed, long day. Tried to find some pallets to make a fence and nada to be had anywhere. Hubby sent money so we went quick shopping. Son went to buy more internet cards and just as he came to thehouse he stubbed his big toe and tore his toenail clear off. It was hanging by the ccuticle. So since my first aid stuff is all in the states I had to take him to a clinic. Er room 15 bucks, meds 35. They cut the toenail offand bandaged it he needs to go redress it for a few days. Thankfully he did tetanus shots in usa for his work so I dont hage to worry. All the chicks got to bed ok. Nite, oh welcome new folks, glad surgery went well blue.

Blooie, that's great news, will continue to pray for her recovery.
Barredsrock welcome to the porch,I'm new here but really enjoying it.
Oldmomma have a good night and hope your son's toe heals up nice.

ChickenBoy - what do you want to train the opossum to do? Tricks, or just become a pet?

Blooie, so happy to hear that Linda is doing well. Praying for your whole family in this time of trial. Keep your faith in the Lord.

Glad to hear that the escapee cow will soon be back with her buddy. With the way she is sticking around, I hope that is an indication of her willingness to become a pet again. Will she come to a bucket of grain at all? I used to help a neighbor get his horses back into the pasture by leading with a bucket with a little grain to shake in the bottom. Sorry that your first experience with these cows was so difficult.

Fingers crossed that Bug will thrive and be back with the flock soon. Are you going to try to slip her back into the clutch when she gets stronger? Are you giving her any electrolytes in the water?
Just a pet.

Heartsizedfarm you can feed your hen what ever she likes to eat. Ascites is not caused by something she is eating. How is she doing today? Is she still leaking her fluids?

She is, but less so. I sprayed her tum with an antiseptic spray and tucked her in the coop for the night. She really sucked up the electrolytes this afternoon. I'll decide in the morning if she needs another day indoors or if she can free range with the others. Don't want to catch her rolling about in the veg garden with that seepy abdomen, right?

Here you go ChickenBoy190... HA!

That's awesome

Yes, I would worry about germs if she is leaking. Sounds like you are doing great with her.
