Wow -- this is a busy thread. Back in the 60s and 70s, Lady Bird Johnson began a program of hiway beautification here in Texas. One of the things they did was to plant Texas wild flowers along all the major roadways. Right now the bluebonnets are in bloom, as are the Indian paintbrushes. Soon will be the red (crimson) clover and the firewheels. The DoT does not mow the median or along the edge of the hiway as long as the wildflowers are in bloom, because most of them are annuals that must reseed themselves. Texas hiways are indeed a sight in spring. I've planted our meadow in wildflowers as well. We have quite an assortment, and I follow the DoT's mowing schedule.
