The Front Porch Swing

Attention deficit disorder. That doesn't mean he craves attention. That means that his brain neurons are firing so fast that his attention span only lasts a certain amount of time. With Patrick as a 3 yr ol, his was about 6 seconds. It's better now but not much. I could start a sentence and by the 6th word his eyes would glaze over and he was thinking of something else. That's why his learning was so late. Twelve in 3 wks and he's terrified of people , outside bugs, loud crowds etc. He has to get on the bus everyday and go to class. That's why he has a grown helper to sit by him and show him things other people have picked in one sentence. Writes like a five yr old. When he comes to see me and watches TV, he starts a new movie every 5 mins. Heartbreaking. No idea what he will do later in life.

That article fits him (my step-son, not your kid. Felt I needed to clarify) to a T.

My step-son doesn't get distracted by things around him so much, it's more his own mind that gets him

He's just quirky.. socially a bit off. Just doesn't get the hint that someone is not interested in hearing his stories 24/7. He can't hold a conversation that's give and take: you talk about something and he takes it, turns it around and inserts topics that has nothing to do with the conversation, but it's stuff he's interested in.

It sounds you're having a much harder time.

So ADD and ADHD are two separate disorders? Have you looked into Aspergers Syndrome ? I have another gson that has this and can talk forever on what he's interested in . He can't imagine that others are just standing there waiting for him to stop so they can escape.

For example: he was interested in King of the Hill cartoon. He watched it everyday. Had notes on who starred, who they played, what scene each person was in etc. And that was each and every episode. Thank you Lord, he discovered that he adores reading Scifi books. Now it's Robert Heinlein. Starting with book 1.

I've wondered about Asperger's too, but at this point he's not having too much issues with it. Yet? (He's creepy about one kid at school.. If I ask about his day he talks about the other kid... what the heck?

It's partially genetics, I'm sure. My husband gets that way about movies, spewing off actors and what they've been in etc. My kids are worse off, because I am pretty darn socially inept on top of that. Go genes go! After all the autism research I've done for Thomas I am convinced we're all autistic. We're screwed.

There is a movie about her. She did a TED Talk ... she has written a new book, some advice about raising autistic kids. Lots of interviews available on podcasts. I saw her chair at an art gallery in NYC like 20 years ago... pretty famous person!

Because asberghers is a high functioning form of autism, many don't get diagnosed. So lots of times adults who feel "off" socially, have it, but never knew or even knew it was a thing. If you or your step son find it hard to emphasize with others and don't get social cues it worth looking into. And the whole getting stuck on one thing and kind of "obsessing" over it is very comman! We had a kid obsessed with movies.... actully we had a few. One acted out the different parts and wanted staff to act them out with him. There's some pretty cool info out there and it's great there is so much so you can see the world from the perspective of those with it. It's definitely eye opening!

The movie about Temple Grandin is very good. You can pull it up on ITunes. My husband grew up around the meat packing industry and he was very impressed by her. I need to tune in to the TED program have sees some super interesting topics presented.

She's pretty amazing. I think everyone should either read some of her stuff or watch her movie.
