The Front Porch Swing

In defense if people who ask if they can help ...

I have to do that because I really don't see well and tend to be very overwhelmed in social situations and new places ... trying to get and keep my bearings without hurting myself or the furniture. So ... I need to ask, and I'm sincere.

Also, I vastly prefer it if people ask me what they can do to help in my house so I have a clue what they're up to. I usually have a plan that can be foiled with too much help.

For the record, you may always wash it if it's in the sink. You may always vacuum up the pet hair.

We have obnoxious ones who invite themselves....always. Can't seem to get away from them. Big family.
I only have one brother and he is only fun for about an hour after that, he gets mean. Don't really mind that he don't show up most of the time.
My SIL invites herself all the time, but, she busts her hump any time she is here. Always cleaning something inside or out. Pulling weeds, sweeping floor, etc. I don't mind her a bit. The rest of my inlaws are a big PITA. Better than everyone else and out to prove it. NO thanks. Pass.

I still love them, just from a distance.

Yep...no one with that handicap in our family. They just like to eat and flop down because that's the way it's always been. Like little birds in a nest with their beaks open, squawking for food. Guests to our homes are not expected to jump in and help and we won't let them if they try....but family? They are not guests, they are family and they know full well where everything goes, what the routine is and how Mom likes things to be done....they should know, they've sat and watched it often enough.

I love your smile. Okay you know you did that on purpose....red hair. What is the story behind that?

My mom was over for a visit and we bought some temporary hair stuff and did eachothers hair as well as my mother-in-law's (I used to live with my inlaws for 2 year). It was SUPPOSED to wash out after a few times. In my case it came out fire engine red and then just faded every time I washed it. So instead of dealing with weirdly faded hair we bought some permanent stuff in a more agreeable shade of red. Still not my color.. too much red in my skin for it to look ok

Beware of those cruise ship drinks.... I drank something blue in a tall glass with a straw and pretty much dont remember the rest of the evening... CUTE bartender though... I remember him.

I do enjoy blue drinks... although I haven't drank anything stronger than a glass of wine in quite a while.

Oh I have been around some pretty Snooty horse people.... Dressage Queens, Different kinds of people who have more money than sense...

I Looked at the video thinking I would never know the group.... OMG there is Felicia Day right there singing..... What a hoot I have to share this with my son... but of course hes probably already seen it.

I love Felicia Day. Very creative and genuine (she actually created The Guild with friends for fun, no idea it would get so popular). Geeks and nerds unite

The songs are great. She has a few more on You Tube, a real treat for RPG fans.

We went to a huge family reunion last summer.. most folks I had never met before, or only once or twice and briefly. Heck, even remembering all the names and who is who was mindblowing. I end up totally shell shocked, but I do want to help, even then.

I used to try to jump in and help at my sisters when we visit. One sis loves to have me visit because we get so much done in her house while I am there, just chat and clean. Two of my other sisters, not really glad for the help.

I also had a friend sit me down in her kitchen and explained that she is just such a control freak that it drives her nuts to have anyone help her because she has to go back and check that everything is done just the way she has to have it. And I mean anyone, her own kids included. One Christmas, after everyone left in the evening, she found herself emptying the cupboards and washing all the dishes because she found one glass with a spot of lipstick on it. And she couldn't stop until everything in the cupboard was washed, dried and put away. Even the stuff she hadn't used in over 5 years.

So, I now ask if I can help. If they say no, then I ask if I can keep them company while they work.

I'm taking my cats to Wisconsin over the 4th of July. DH has to deal with them by himself until I can move there permanently. I will miss the fuzzy little boogers, but not so much during the summer months though. They are definitely my cats, if I am around he does not exist.

I like that better than anything....for someone to at least sit and talk with you as you clean up after the meal. That doesn't happen here...everyone goes in the other room so they won't have to watch us clean and as they talk, laugh and have a good time we are slaving away in the kitchen to get things put away and cleaned up. Makes us feel like servants.

I wish we had a picture of my mom. I was in the 4th grade at the time and living in Charlottesville, VA. Mom wanted to color her hair and Dad decided he would save money and help her do it at home. Hey, she agreed to it. Anyway, he somehow turned her hair green. From then on, she went to a beauty shop. My siblings and I loved that green hair!

Ken is a mechanical engineer and can handle mechanical engines, etc. very well. Just don't give him a pair of scissors. We hadn't been married very long when I was wanting to get my hair cut. He wanted to do it. I still had 'stars' in my eyes and told him 'yes'. He had me get in the shower and hang my head upside down. Now I am beginning to have doubts but too late to back. He was so proud of his handiwork. He still doesn't know that I went to the beauty shop the next day to get it straightened up. One side was longer than the other and there were places that the hair was very short. He can't understand why I won't let him cut my hair any more.

Lisa :)
