The Front Porch Swing

Good glorious morning to you all.  I'm thoroughly loving this summer polar vortex.  It's 65 degrees with a light breeze.  Perfect weather.  13 y.o. off at summer camp for the week, so no raging hormones here!  I've not had to work all week, so regaining some of my depleted energy.  Planted rose bush, 2 Russian Sage, 2 different coreopsis and pink bee balm.  Getting about a quart of raspberries/day lately, blueberries still coming on, pole beans are producing well.  Several of the pullets checking out the nest boxes, though the ones who are doing so look to be a ways off from first egg.  Rooster is tid bitting the girls, and actually sharing his morsels, making little nests all over the yard, wiggling his butt around in them and trying his best to entice someone, anyone, please, to put an egg in his latest comfy spot.

Summer camp?!? Kids here are starting school already!!!

Mine just enrolled for Fall. Hes technically a Senior now so his enrollment time was the earliest hes ever had it. He says this semester is his first where he is not taking any prerequisites for his major.... at this time All i know is its twelve units. Astronomy Physics and Mathematics. Hes an Astronomy major and a Math minor at San Diego State.

He did his General Education at community college.... Got an Associates of Science degree there. Then he chose Astronomy for his Bachelors but needed a couple more Prerequisite courses so while he was taking those at Community he Got accepted to San Diego state before he was technically finished with the requirements for entry. Because he chose Astronomy for his Bachelor of Science they require a Minor in Math.

This is a kid who was math phobic well into his first semesters in college.... Kept telling me he was failing yet he always came away with Bs... Scratched my head and still do over that one.... Kid I say... hes going to be 25 in October.... LOL.

Yeah… countdown is on for my son… First day of school is August 12th. Where did summer go?

First day of school here is the 7th, meet the teacher on the 5th. First grade.... dear God I am terrified, he's so not ready.. and this isn't even my 'own' kid (step-son). It's been pulling teeth to get him to read during the summer. He had two weeks of summer camp school, don't think that did much good. He's lazy

"I want to play this and this game, which one is it?" "You can read, so read! You can figure it out" *sigh*

The boy got a bike for his birthday and doesn't use it because it requires physical exertion.. He plays outside for five minutes and he's done. His grandparents always got him the battery operated cars to ride, that require zero effort... is it any wonder he's getting fat? Yes, fat. He's six years old in a size 8...but that means shorts come halfway down his calf, because he's short. He's always asking his dad for more food and juice/milk. He will ask during breakfast what's for dinner... he wants food all the time. And all he wants to do is read comic books, play video games and watch TV. We say 'no' all the time, but then he just lays on the floor, playing with cars. His mom is fat, dad is fat, I am fat.... History of diabetes, heart disease etc. ...We got a long road ahead.

He'll be ok... someday.

Try painting people who would not be considered handsome or pretty - it's great practice to draw imperfections.

I digitally painted that for my husband. It's his mom who passed away last year. He had no recent pictures of her, except ones of her in the nursing home in bed. She was bedridden for years..

I need to pick up my pencil again, it's been too long. I've worked from home on and off as an artist for hire and it really kills your creativity. Last year I had taken it to the next level and registered myself as a sole proprietor. Never again. Not worth the head ache.

It's hard once you replace art out of love with art for money.. every time you 're making something that little voice in your mind asks "Is this going to make us money?" I just stopped altogether, couldn't stand it anymore. I sold all my supplies, except for my digital tablet.

We have a tv that we can only watch movies on. No tv or any electronics during the day and family movie before bed some nights. My son is extreamly active though, so he isn't really capable of sitting through a movie. As a kid, if we came inside after a few minutes (I never did that but my brother would) it was a firm "NO, go back outside". I would sign him up for a sport. We ALWAYS had to do a sport. No wasn't an option. I did swim team because it was year round. My four year old loves to climb, so last week he had his first climbing class at the local climbing gym. We are also very active which I'm sure helps! Yesterday my son asked "can we walk to the pizza place?" It's a decent walk! So we let him have pizza for dinner and walked there. We do hikes or go to the beach a few times a week and he's starting soccer soon. I'm sure it's harder to do things when it's not consistent at both homes. I also don't have juice. He can have milk or water period! If he ever gets juice somewhere else most the time he has a few sips and asks for water.

All you artistic people are making me jealous!
