The Front Porch Swing

I need some help!

It looks like I have an infectious coryza outbreak here but I've noticed there is no smell to the swelling. I'm concerned because it looks like only my adult hens and one of my roosters has it.

A couple don't have any symptoms but they have all been housed together, so I don't feel safe about removing the "healthy" birds and releasing them into the yard.

Does anyone have any medical advice? Should I just let whatever this is run it's course? I haven't lost any birds, which makes me think it might not actually be coryza, but it looks the same. I've never had an outbreak like this and it is very concerning.

I think I know where it came from but I don't know how because the lady I get an occasional bird from vaccinates all her birds. Ugh, this is frustrating. If this is a coryza outbreak, I wouldn't feel safe breeding anymore of my birds to sell. This really sucks.

I had a health scare last year. One bird had swelling of the face, eyelids in particular... but never any discharge, no smell. No one looked poofed up, everyone ate and drank. Had a few sneezes and one bird had a raspy rattly breathing.

No one died and they're all healthy as can be now.

I think it's entirely possible for birds to catch a cold

I mean, we get colds and sniffles too! Not everything is some deadly virus. Surely they have sinuses like we do and surely they get gunked up sometimes. The flock had all gotten horribly wet in the rain a few days prior and I think they just got a cold.

I gave everyone some vet RX and rubbed it on the face of the bird with the swollen eyelids. Sneezing was gone in days, the eyelids took 2 weeks to go down.

I've learned MG and the like are very, VERY common in flocks. It's almost impossible to avoid. While bio security is a biggie when it comes down to things like avian flu, respiratory things are just something impossibly to avoid. They're dormant until stress flares it up.

If I had deaths I might've culled my flock, but if you cull everytime a bird sneezes well... you'd never have any chickens.

I forget who was posting advice regarding roost spacing, but I followed her suggestion, and placed the top roost 15" out from the wall, and the second one 15" out from that one, but about a foot lower. Takes up more room... kind of, but keeps the poop from skidding down the wall, or landing on the birds on the lower roost.
Good to know. My White Rocks are BIG and the 4 rung roost is useless except for the top. I'm going to take it out and put in two roosts the same height, about 2' tall like they do in hatcheries to avoid injuries and bickering. Even with the 6' width, the 15 Golden comet pullets manages to fit on the top. Not so the Whites.

Spring is certainly here. Last week I heard my XW White Rock crow for the first time (and many since) and now the Blosl Cock has been warbling to the girls to come get the goodies. They are just on the point of lay and he has pretty much ignored them for the food. Yea!!!!! About darn time. They are such slackers. I think they were born last April. I got them a community nest box set up today and they are inspecting it. Only one little blue egg layer and she did not like the improv one I had fixed up. They STARED at her. I'll be putting some cloth around the nest box this time.

You're right! I just need to calm the heck down and let this pass. I gotta take the puppy approach to this. When a chicken sneezes, automatically my mind goes to "Oh my gosh, did I forget to change to my coop sandals?" or "Have wild birds come into the coop?!" and even "Oh dear sweet baby Jesus, did I bring back a deadly disease when I passed that pet store on my way home?!"

And yet when my puppy throws up, I just think, "Nivia needs to stop feeding him bread, his belly can't handle it," and all is fine. Yup, gotta take the puppy approach. ^_^

There was another news story about our little Ashley today in Sioux Falls. I'm so proud of my family - my sweet niece did a wonderful job in the interview. I'm so grateful to all the people who are making this difficult journey as easy as possible for the family.

Ok my friends, I'm sorry in advance for this rant, but I honestly can not believe this is happening right now! This is a picture of our fence this morning after the high wind and rains

My husband proped it up and made a little make shift fence to separate our yard and the neighbors for the time. My husband called the neighbors and asked to talk to them. He told them we had already bought $116 in material and we needed to buy about $100. We would rebuild the fence and all my husband asked is if he could drive his truck up their driveway to load the old rotten fence is his truck. They are both in there 80's and the old man just went crazy! He told my husband "he can't touch his fence" and "how dare we prop it up" and "we never saw it down". Thank god I took pictures! They then got mad at him for propping it up, I told them a fence with nails in our yard is dangerous to our son. They then blamed us for having a kid. I said, yes we have a kid, I guess that just makes us horrible. The man told my husband he would shoot him if he "came on his property" apparently the rotten fallen over fence is his property? I told him, we're building a fence and labor for free! We aren't asking anything, do you want me to push it over into your yard for you? This is ridiculous! He then started saying all this stuff that never happened and accusing my husband of "the last time you fixed this fence". My husband said "I've only lived here a year and a half!". Long story short, we now have the sheriff here and I'm inside with my son and my husband is trying to talk to these crazy people. If they told me "hey the fence blew over, it's rotten, we're building a new one and we won't ask you for a dime", I would say "oh my gosh, thank you but I insist on contributing ad thank you so much for propping the fence up for the time being". I know the man is just crazy and the wife has always been rude, but this is just so beyond crazy. I expected them to say they wouldn't pay for it, but for them to threaten my husband, who is honestly that guy everyone likes and is nice to everyone, and for me to have to show them pictures and call the sheriff is so crazy! How is this happening? Sorry about the rant. I am in shock! And high winds tonight! I hope what's left of the fence stays up!

@Alice28 I am so sorry you are having to deal with this!

I wonder if the old guy has dementia or something. I hope everything works out OK.
Nasty neighbors can really be hard to deal with.
