The Great Egg Shipping Experiment!

Phase II of The Great Egg Shipping Experiment!
Well, for me, anyway.

I have Wheaten/Blue Wheaten Ameraucana Eggs on the way! They are coming from Texas and should arrive Thursday. I will take pics and report on my hatch.

These are coming from a fellow BYCer that I contacted and inquired about some of her eggs over a year ago. I had decided to wait, but she contacted me and had some that she thought I might be interested in - and SURPRISE - I WAS!!

I'm very excited, I have only hatched shipped eggs once, and it was not as successful as I would have liked. Wish me luck!

Yay!!! I am incubating some Wheaten/Blue Wheaten Ameraucana eggs now from a BYCer also! I peeked and saw veining on one of mine today that I held a light up to it (never picked it up). I'm only on day 3. I hope you have a great hatch with them!!! Good luck!!!

Contrary to the above regarding number 3, folks are seeing air cells reattach over the resting period on the Easter hatch a long thread. The sad truth is that you will not have good hatch rates with eggs treated roughly and not packed well. If you would, please change number three to let the eggs rest for 2 to 5 days based on the air cell condition. For eggs too dark to see the air cell(Do not get mad but it is worth the investment to get a ova view high intensity candler if hatching dark eggs) base the days on the condition of the box. I would rest all shipped eggs for 2 days.

Not turning the eggs does not make the chicks stick it causes deformities like missing eyes and etc. and a lower hatch rate. That does not happen unless you do not turn the eggs from days 8 to 16. Eggs do not need to be turned before or after. If they are getting real serious about turning, the bear in mind that many on that thread make their own incubators and do not have accurate thermometers. The studies and text books have all listed temperature during incubation as being the number one cause of hatch problems.

1 Temps too low
2. Temps too high
3. Humidity too high
4 Humidity too low
5. ventilation

not turning enough is way down somewhere on the list. Take care of the first three and you will have much better hatch rates.

Sticking is most often caused by incubating too low for the first 18 days and too high of humidity. Sticking is a symptom of the yolk not absorbing completely.

The cooling is simply that--the eggs are cooled for two hours a day from day 7 to 2 days before hatch. My Octagon 40 has cool down built into the controls now. This has information and links to research and articles about cooling. http://www.brinsea.com/cooling.html

The diary thread might make a big deal about a lot of things but most of them are only going to make hatch rates a bit better better.

I have had a lot of success following the recommendations in this thread.

ok rest for 2 or 3 days, how often to turn on the brinsea? on the candler I have the brinsea oval, I will read the easter thread also.
one more question why are all the pretty chicks ROO'S ? I have the pretties white easter egger it's a roo.

There are a couple of breeds with pretty girls. Check out the Pita Pinta in my Avatar.

Another pretty one is the Golden laced Wyndotte and a favorite of min, Partridge Rocks!

The eggs go in big side up at incubating temperature. If you do not have an auto turner, turn them 3 or 4 times a day and start turning on day 3 for shipped eggs that look ok. The auto turner turns them a bunch!

I had 2 ducklings Hatch out of my first batch of shipped duck eggs......50% 2 out of 4...that survived the USPS...1st one pipped early even bled, I left it alone it broke it head and wings out the next day still had yolk sac. I treated it just kept it clean and moist it survived took three days to absorb yolk sac...really small compared to it's hatch mate..2nd duckling 2 days later had horrible saddle cell way mispositioned pipped got it bill out for several hours really big duckling helped it out (it was ready no space to turn around)...eggtopsey on remaining 2...one quit late but probably before lock down..one was upside down and drowned...will post pictures soo cute the first on is a black swedish looks like daffy duck, the second is either blue or black..

Ron, In my Experience the Brinsea Auto turner was very cheaply made. You are better off without it.

Dan

I still have a year of warranty so when it breaks after that, I will likely not use it any more.

This one is clicking a bit so I expect I will have to get it replaced again.
