The Great Egg Shipping Experiment!

Not sure what the humidity in the house is, but we keep it relatively warm (75-78)for the kids, and it's probably 50f outside. The bator is staying 99.6-100.2 and is in the dining room with the vents closed.

Rice!! What a great idea!!! I may try this since I don't really want to disturb the eggs to remove them and get water OUT... hmmm
Popcorn(unpopped) absorbs water better than rice.

If that does not work, a small room with a de humidifier may be necessary.

I have popcorn seeds too!! I keep them in the fridge though - I will take some out now so they warm up then try adding them. Thank you so much!!!!

How low is too low on Humidity before lock down? Opinions? Facts?

Dan

Sorry, Dan, I got distracted....look! a chicken!

I think anything below 50% at lockdown would be a problem, although, once they start hatching, that will jump up. I like mine at around 65% at lockdown and it gets into the 70-85% range on it's own.

ETA: Oops! Read that wrong. I have kept mine as low as 16 - 20% throughout the first 18 days and still had good hatch rates. Don't worry about the number, worry about keeping those air cells on track. There are a lot of variables that can affect what the humidity should be, but he air cell growth is the true indicator. You can also weigh them and track the moisture loss that way if you cant see into the eggs by candling.
