The Great Egg Shipping Experiment!

I liked that double boxing too. What I didn't think of to check at the time, is, do you then weigh the packages? Or are those flat rate?

I swap stuff and don't have a car, so glad rate was the way I started. I see that it wouldn't be much to get a scale and go that route. I wish it would be easier to know which way was faster without trying each way individually into the computer each time.

My first eggs arrived today. Two were pointy side up in packaging. They were wrapped individually in bubble wrap, then together, then newspaper. None were cracked. My first candling showed moving air cells in more than half. Since it is my first time, hoping that the couple I don't see are intact. I put them at room temp upright. Some air cells I still can't see at all, after 19 hours. One is oddly shaped (maybe a saddle). I also picked up some locally of another type. The breeder is new to this, also. Of 8 nonshipped, large fowl eggs, I clearly see 4 air cells. Of course none are moving. I'm sure I will get better at this. But, after 24 hours, am I just putting them into the incubator and hoping for the best? It's a very gentle turner, but do I opt not to turn for longer? I could always hand turn the others for awhile. Thanks for your help.

I shipped my first box of hatching eggs to a friend and this is how I packed them. I was a little nervous as they were going to Maine in this last cold front with temps in the teens.
I used a nest of straw and wrapped each egg in doubled bubble wrap and marked arrows on them so they would go into the box in the right way. I used bubble wrap around all the eggs after I got them into the box and I had straw on all 4 sides of the inside box. I also put straw in between the two boxes to absorb the bumps and also to keep the eggs from freezing. I shipped them out on Sat. and she got them today and said the outside box got a little squished and the outside box had a hole punched in it. But the inside box was untouched and the eggs when she candled them were in perfect condition. Air cells intact and unscrambled. She said she had never gotten eggs that fast or packed that good. I feel very flattered. I also did warn her not to open the box in the house that it would make a huge mess. lol
She did appreciate the warning. lol I did put call for pick up on the box, but I forgot to ask her if she got a call. I will check back with her to see.
*They did not call her, I got the area code wrong on her number* Oooops

Here is what the reciever said about the box I packed and sent to her:

"That has to be:
1. The best pack job I've ever seen for eggs
2. The fastest I've ever gotten shipped eggs

Your box arrived safe and sound. Looks like the post office squished it a bit and there's a hole under FRAGILE (go figure) but the inside was impeccable. The double box system worked really well (again) because the squishing of the outer box (which wasn't bad at all by USPS standards) didn't even come close to penetrating the inner sanctum of eggs. The nest the eggs were in was so cute and perfect. Yours is by far the nicest pack job I've ever seen. I think the straw also helped absorb the shock. I especially liked the arrows on the bubble wrap, which is something I've never seen before, to ensure you pack them going the right way in the box. Upon candling with my high potency LED light, nothing appears to be fractured or scrambled. Nice job!
I keep them on the counter for 24 hours after shipping, so I'll get the bator out and stabilized today and get them in it tomorrow."

*I sent her 4 chicken eggs and 6 turkey eggs* and as of one week 3/4 chicken eggs were developing and 5/6 of the turkey eggs were developing.
I will post her end hatch rate.

*Note: I shipped these express and sent them out of Sat. she got them on Monday. Is that any faster? Idk.

I got eggs packed that way once. Yes they went to the bottom of the box.

It's just about as bad when people use styrofoam peanuts with loose eggs, or when they use shredded paper that's too loose.

Shredded paper works fine when it's packed in the box real tight.

Styrofoam peanuts are fine if the eggs are inside an inner box, or if they're wrapped with bubble wrap, then placed in a carton, and then the carton is wrapped in more bubble wrap. I've gotten a few shipments like that.

Those bead things are useless.

Maybe the shipper needs to read this thread to get some better idea's on packing.

i think the shipper needs to send fresh eggs first...let alone learn how to pack and ship eggs....i have hatched every single egg shipment i have gotten thru the mail over 60 percent...if i dont even get 50 percent from this shipment im going to know i got scammed with old eggs...bummer...but im hoping for the best...so keeping my fingers crossed...everything is supposed to hatch beginning of may so we shall see...as there is three different shipments in their right now from three different people...im more concerned about the quail eggs...everything else seems like they are straight forward people...so well leave it at that...until hatch...then i can make more comments...and i have her direct number so i shall be giving her a call when that day comes

where are you from? And I need a few eggs that are almost ready to hatch. I have a little buff that gets picked on by the big ones so my husband and I made a nest for her in here. She has set twice now and I do not have any fertilized eggs. I am willing to try to pay you whatever if you can get some ( any kind ) to me before her days are over which are quite soon. I have 3 other buffs also setting (these are all about the same time) Can you try to help? I am willing to learn with you! I live in SW TX and don't know where you are but please remember my email is [email protected]
Thanks so much,
Margie

I suggest you search Craigslist in your area. Should be lots of fertile eggs, cheap, if you don't care what kind.
