The Great Egg Shipping Experiment!

I have had three breeders say they would ship replacement eggs to me. Only one of them as followed through, a year later after I contacted them.

Off to contact the ones that owe me eggs.....

The Buff Orps that were shipped to me in April were horrible. They had porous shells, the air sacs were all wonky...not one good. I contacted the shipper because two broke in shipment. Typically I would not had said anything but they came in one box wrapped in some kind of foam and I can't remember what was packed around them....the box was leaking when we got it....not good...even the Post Office said that he receives shipment eggs many times before and that was the worst he had saw throughout his years. Anyway, the guys said he would ship me new ones. When I contacted him to ship them he told me he lost most of his flock to predation and could not. I am not sure I believe him. Lesson learned.

Got eggs this morning and the box was in good shape. One corner slightly crunched. Inside packing was eggs individually wrapped in bubble wrap then set big end up on larger bubble wrap, sides were protected with styrofoam and short pieces of foam pipe insulation. The spaces were filled with shredded paper and the crumpled paper on top.

Very nice job on the packing and all eggs arrived intact.

The seller did reship a week after she said but was apologized for mix up she thought she shipped already. Sent 10 eggs, they arrived three days later than expected due to post office but put in the incubator and hoping for the best.

As I am sure you can tell Marans are a good chunk of them and then the rest are some Easter Eggers just for Fun. I know I am not telling you anything new Ron but this hatching is addictive. I figure I need to keep after it to refine my techniques. Plans for the future include Silver Laced Wyandottes, Cream Legbars, & of course some more Black Australorps (my Favorite Breed) Any comments or tips on the breeds I am incubating or planning on incubating? This go around I raised my temp 1/2 degree F. I have started with a dry hatch and Humidity is currently running 38% and I hope to see it stay between there and 42%. At Lock down I will try to raise it 70% or slightly above. I have made a couple of paper towel A frames that fit in my water tray that raised the humidity up nicely during my trials. Doing my best to get a feel for this, so it is continuous hatching until I get a method to my madness!

Marans are tough. They do not travel well so the shipping being as good as it was a great thing. Marans usually hatch late and EEs usually hatch early so use hatching trays or egg cartons at hatch. You will want to add water after two days of lockdown but keep the humidity closer to 65 to 70%. Chicks suffocate if humidity goes much over 80%. 38% during incubation should work well for the breeds you are incubating.

The Marans were the latest egg to hatch last time. How critical do you feel keeping big end up on the egg during lock down is? I am hoping the key to successful hatching is keeping good records and then making slight adjustments.

It is like an Old Timer told me though (He's been hatching 50 years) You can not hatch a Bad egg! If you start with all good eggs you will have a good hatch. I think it is double hard to get even a few good eggs through shipping, but it is still Fun.

I would hatch shipped eggs big end up. It helps if the develop with wonky saddle air cells.

Yes, you cannot hatch bad eggs well, either from flock problems or rough shipping.

The problem I have is the Dickey hatching trays have a lid (quite handy) and with it on there really is not enough room to stand the egg on end. I guess I could leave the lids off.
