The Green Dragon Roost

Made some progress on the Green Dragon today. Not a lot though, we lost one of the chicks this morning. It was slow going for a while.

So sorry about your little chick. it is hard losing them at any age.

Coop and run looking good.

I notice that most coops seem to have hardware cloth instead of chicken wire. Is something wrong with chicken wire. I'm getting near that point with my run and need to decide. I need to keep the chickens in and other birds and cats out. Chicken wire should be enough, right?

Chicken wire is meant to keep chickens out of stuff or in somewhere, not keep predators away from the chickens. Raccoons can reach through chicken wire and pull a chicken apart, not something I want to wake up too in the morning. Last summer when we started this journey we went with 1/2" hardware cloth, it also helps keep vermin out of the coop and run area. We went with a raised house and hang our food and water there. Followings a suggestion I read somewhere on BYC the best cost for hardware cloth was found on Amazon, go figure, about 1/2 the cost as our local Homedepot. Good Luck, your doing a beautiful job.

x2 I agree. An owl can rip through your chicken wire. I have 1"x 2" hardwire on our run. Keeps the birds out. Even though we really do not have any predators running around I have seen my share of hawks and great horned owls around in the trees. Gallo (tucson) in the AZ thread had a coyote jump his fence. I would protect them with the hardwire. To keep the run dry ,when we get rain, hubby put on the clear corrugated plastic roofing sheets.

Ok, I decided on 1/2" hard ware cloth for the bottom 4' of the run. Most of the roof will be covered with corrugated sheet metal. The rest will have chicken wire. Thanks!

Are chickens particular about having dividers in the nesting boxes? These are 36" so I could make 2 or 3 in each. This will be for 8 birds.
I can easily add dividers if need be, but I figured if they don't care, I'll save myself the trouble.
The wife and daughter started painting today also. British Racing Green! I didn't take any pics of that yet.

Dividers will keep hens from stepping on eggs already in box. Also keeps eggs from getting rolled to the other end. A simple 2×4 will work, the divider doesn't have to be a complete cut off wall to divide the chickens- just enough to keep nesting material and eggs in the box. Coop looking fabulous by the way!

Thanks! I'm glad to hear the divider doesn't need to be a whole wall, that makes it easy.
