The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

Personally speaking don't use ebay for true Rhode Island Red eggs, most use the name calling them Mohawk or Heritage and have the darker color but they really aren't anything but production as i have learned. That is why i'm watching this site till i see some listed here, just missed them last year but watching more closely maybe this will be the year, if not ill wait no more ebay for me.
I agree. I got burned on a purchase of supposedly show quality Rhode Island Red hatching eggs on Ebay. Spent all that time and money raising them up. 2 of the the pullets had light, laced breasts. Being a newbie to standard bred chickens, I just didn't know, but knew enough to know those birds just weren't right. Serendipity, I posted photos of them on BYC and Matt1616 answered and gave me the true story and I ended up being able to buy some of his Mohawk line chicks last year. Now I'm just waiting for them to start laying so I can hatch chicks to offer to others. They are 10 months old now. I think the winter season is slowing them down in starting up to lay. I see an egg very rarely. Is this typical for the Mohawk line?

nice chicks Ron! I have 40 eggs in the bator from your line . on the mohawks laying i am not sure but my heritage most took about 8 months to begin and i added light and they are laying 4-5 eggs a week now.

Bob,
Can a two week old chick handle a two day trip Express Mail to West Coast?

Never sent any that far. Post office told me 2 days from my location. Would be mid March when it warms up.

Ron
Yes. They leave your post office on Monday at 4 pm the get to the post office in Calif on Wed Moaring about 8 am. Sometimes around noon or 4 pm on Tuesday. I have not lost any in about six years. I use to ship two day priorty mail but that has turned in to a three to four day trip. Then you can loose about 25% of the birds they need water by then. bob

Thanks Ronnie.
I am glad yours are laying good, the pullets I kept are just getting started. Sounds like you are going to have a bunch running around. Keep me posted
Talk to you soon.

He seems dark and brick shaped. He is uncomfortable and off ballance on this stand. The best picture is on the ground walking around natural. If possable try that in the barn or on the snow even. What blood line is he from.?

You need to put them under lights.

Mine are about the same age, same line and from the same person. I have three pens set up with one pullet in each pen. I'm getting about two eggs every other day from them. Mine have only been under lights now for about two almost three weeks. Before then I would only get one eggs every now and then.

I have some of Matt's birds too. The females are 9 months old and no eggs yet. I don't have them under lights but I will be rearranging my coops and pens so they will be under lights.

I originally got some eggs too that I was told were Heritage RIR. When I hatched the eggs they definitely were not Heritage RIR. I hatched them out and they are in the coop with my general population group. I tried again and got some eggs from a different source and these definitely look good with the nice dark red color with the black/green on their tails, nice shape, black beaks and the nice brown going up their feet and legs. They are also in my general population as I don't know their origin. A couple of years ago and last year I bought some Heritage RIR's at the Lake City show and was told they were descendants of the Reese line. These birds I have kept separated in another coop from the general population. I will be showing a couple of them at the Inverness, FL show February 23rd.

Anyone plan to have started birds available at an early spring show in Oh., Ky., Or In.? Looking for LF SC Reds and we would love to get at least one trio, or two pairs if available. We can also do shipped day old chicks now as well if anyone has some.
