What is a packrat?Hmmm. We have pack rats in Mississippi. There may be another name for them but I've found their nest in the loft of the barn. Have even shot a hold in the roof one time chasing one. They seem to like to collect dried horse manure and put in their nest and can make a general mess out of a perfectly decent storage building.

I can't say for sure because I don't know the folks but I can say for sure that they sound like Dick Horstman's birds. I have a few of them that are just now starting to lay. They are nice sized birds with deep mahogany color. If you go to Dicks site, you can see his birds there.Ok Bob, NY Reds and others have any of you ever heard of Sunnysideupmicrofarm that have RoseComb Rhode Island Reds! their listing says "Our RC RIR are big and have great color and type. They are excellent layers of a large brown egg and their rose comb does not freeze as easily in the winter! Great free ranging, heritage breed original stock form Tim Bowles and Rick Bond." Just wondering as i saw an advertisement for this for eggs. They also have a web site.
