What is a packrat?

Chris

LOL Chris its the same critter we call "swamp rats". The ones that eat through hexagonal chicken wire and 1/4-1/2" hardware cloth and eat the biddies and toes off the big chickens. You have to use welded wire here on the outside of the brooder coops to keep the rats out, then line the inside with the smaller wire to keep the chicks in.
I've found some of my mechanic wrenches in pack rat nest, along with shotgun shells, anything shiny for sure, very destructive rascals, the little rat b_st_rds, LOL

The bane of your existence if you have one around. We had some living in our barn a few years ago, they would take things and drag them down into their holes never to be seen again, other things they stored under a pile of wood scraps so we did find them - mostly shiny metal stuff, some not shiny, like the grinding wheel off a handheld grinder. We didn't know what was going on until we came home one day and found a dead one in the driveway leading to the barn. It was so big I didn't think it could be a rat but it had the naked tail, so I did some searching online and discovered it was, indeed, a packrat, or woodrat.

Thanks all, apprec the response, already had email sent to Dick as we were too late last year and just sent sunny side and email also. We will see where this goes.
This is my little flock of RC's from Dick. They like being out even in the snow. lol Thank God it is melting. These are 9 months. One started laying a couple of weeks ago.

Just a few of my Nelson girls. These girls are absolutely the sweetest chickens that I've ever been around. They are sooo friendly. The boys are nice too but these girls are just something special. Check out the horn color on the beaks and front of legs and feet.
The first picture is a hen from dinahmoe 9 months, second picture is girls from NYREDS they are 2 months younger. 7 months. the third picture, the girl on the left is NYREDS,

Thanks everyone for the comments. These guys are going to be 11 months old next week.
I have hatched a few chicks from a couple of them bred back to their mothers and aunts. Last years pullets should be in breeding pens soon.

I will be helping several people get their start this year and should be able to help a few more if anyone is interested.

BANTAM BREEDERS SC
I just got an email from someone asking if I had or can get SC bantam pair that are juveniles. They want them to show at the local fair which is the end of July. They have chicks coming next month but won't be ready for showing. These would be for a 4-H youth. Can any of you bantam breeders give me any infor for this person. I sure would appreciate any help.
e-mails, phone numbers etc would be really nice. You can PM or email me. Click my user name and all info is there.
Thanks so much
Jim

It doesn't look like a field rat. It is squirrel looking with a little bushy tail is gray and have white belly and feet and it can make a mess in your loft of the barns and sheds. It'll gather up anything it can and put in its nest which can become a huge nest after a while. Are pretty little creatures probably have another name for them, I'll have to ask my wildlife rehab friend what is he technical name for them.
