The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

Super happy to have met you today. I am glad you are happy with our chickens. The Fogle Line is really an awesome line of Reds. Take care and we both look forward to pics in the future. Glad your happy, 202
Got my chicks from Ron today. They are lovely. My son has chosen the smallest as his.
Thanks Ron for the great birds.

Yesterday, I had a good opportunity to take a long look at my young birds from January. It is amazing how much they will change as they go from that ugly phase to juvenile.
I am feeling a lot better about this years birds than a couple weeks ago. I changed their feed about a month ago, it has made a big difference in their overall appearance.
After feeding a certain feed for several years I had not noticed that last winter they stopped using animal protein. Don't let anyone tell you that plant protein is just as good. Without the animal protein they started looking washed out and dull.
I feed all my adult breeders Game bird Breeder, but it has to much calcium for young birds. I was feeding all the young birds a 20% grower, because in my area the only other game bird feed with a lower calcium level was medicated.
I have now found a 21% meat maker that has good levels of animal protein, it also has a little higher fat levels than the other feed.

What's it called?? Who makes it?

Our local feed mill grinds a feed intended for broilers, called meat maker. Since they grind it, it is a coarse mash and very, very affordable. Our local mill happens to be a Hubbard Feeds mill. Not sure every local mill grinds their own meat maker, but likely, most do.

I'll have to see if we even have one around here.

Many of the better local feed mills don't even advertise. Ask around. I've two of them, each 25 miles away in different directions. But!!! Life takes us in those directions, once a month or so. I stock up, getting a couple hundred pounds. A local feed mill can save you 40% over the price at a TSC or similar store. Well worth it.

I've got too many mouths to feed this time of year to do anything else. Besides, I cannot find any animal protein feed at those fancy rural stores.

Want to share my RC RIW chicks. I noticed that most of them had stripping on them too and at first thought they were mutts. Now I'm really going to pay attention.

Here is a chick that hatched this morning. I know it's kind of hard to see. But both of these chicks are RC RIWs

The parents of the new chicks that are survivors of an owl attack.

Here are some from a previous hatch. Sadly I had an owl that killed several of my RC RIW hens but here are some offspring from them and many I thought were mutts because of the stripping. I have had some birds go either over a fence or under and get into another pen. I'm pretty sure that only 1 or 2 are males and the rest are females.

Paulletta, hope your trip is going well. You went above and beyond to work chick delivery into your itinerary.
Thank You.

Ron
Thanks so much to both of you.
