The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

OK Robert... some of us are anal... I admit it...
Or more politely put... impatient...

Or as my husband just said... I'm a knowledge absorber.
There... that sounds better than anal.

Jim... hold old were your chicks from Gary before you could sex them? I got 22, lost one through shipping... 21 doing well. They are three weeks old now. They are RC
I really don't pay to much attention until 6 or 8 weeks. If you have never been on my site, go there and look at the Underwood pages. There are lots of pic with dates and you can see the ages of when you can start to tell. I don't really care much. I keep most of them anyway until I can tell a little of what they are going to turn out to be. Just click my user name and you'll see the web site address.

What is the purpose of knowing the sex of a chick at this young age. ?

Is this like peaking under the Christmas wrap paper to try to tell what your gift is your Grandma gave you?

The reason you are getting so many males than females this year is Global Warming. Its Al Gores Fault.

I have about 20 Buff Brahma chicks and I have not even got a clue how many are pullets or ckls I have. I am just trying to keep them alive and free of varments and stray dogs. One year I got six males and one pullet. Bummer as my son use to say.

Maybe I am just a fundy duddy or something.

I am going to order me some of these some day. Real R I Reds.

That's funny. Out of all my breeds I have started this year. Just about all of them have been pullets. 10 HRIR from ron. 2 roos. 7 st run leghorns and 8 st run LB's and all pullets. 6 GLW 1/2 and 1/2. 25 Heritage Delawares Paul Harters, so far looks like only 3 roos.I guess it's just the luck of the draw sometimes.

Knowing the gender might be helpful in the rare cases the chicks were all or almost all males, especially if you were planning on it being the last hatch of the season and wanted females. Then you could at least plan another hatch without waiting the 6-12 weeks to find out you needed more chicks.

I got about ten silkie chicks. I am sure I have half and half I want females to set on eggs what happens happens.

Its ok for beginners to want to know what the sex is at a young age. I think all of us did it when we get started. After a few years you will settle down and not worry about it.

Now the Roos I don't know what these are. Maybe New York Reds can educate me some.

Sounds like Valley Girl Talk or Texting short hand. But I am willing to learn. Heck I am raising silikies for god sakes.

I need some Frizzle White Seromas. I think they would be quite in a bird cage in my house.

I've never owned a silkie, although several friends tell me they are extremely broody.
I have Mille Fleur d'Uccles that I raise (just a hatch every few years) to use for live incubators.
They are more dependable than any electronic device I have ever used.

I know it's rather late in the season but since I just set one more hatch and will have chicks in a month anyway, I thought I'd ask. Will anyone have RC HRIR day old chicks available in the next month? I know it would be better to get an older trio or two but Virginia has so much red tape for bringing in anything other than eggs or day old chicks not many people want to deal with it. And since we're NPIP/AI certified clean, I have to purchase from NPIP/AI clean stock too.

Thanks!
