The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

I really want some HRIR hatching eggs if anyone has any available.

Well... I've decided it's probably a good thing I still can't sex my Underwood chicks yet.
I probably don't wanna know.
I have 21 of them and they are all healthy and big and growing like weeds.
But... my Rhodebars hatched this weekend and 7 of the 8 are cockerels! Seriously!?!
I was so hoping for a large number of pullets or at least an even distribution.
argh!

That is a shame with the Rhode Bars but we never know what will happen. As for the Underwood's, I have 12 that I hatched from eggs and got 9 beautiful big girls and 3 boys. Got 25 from Gary, lost 1 through shipping. Out of the 24 there were 15 pullets and 9 cockerels. I now have 10 pullets and 8 cockerels. Penny got hers the same time and had a good sex ratio also. Good luck to you. These are some of the nicest birds you will find. AND my first bunch are laying already and 6 months old.

Jim... hold old were your chicks from Gary before you could sex them? I got 22, lost one through shipping... 21 doing well. They are three weeks old now. They are RC

Ok. So I watched this video about feather sexing chicks at a day (or 2) old.
. Then I wrote to McMurray's Hatchery and asked them what breeds they used feather sexing on. This is the response I got from them.

Dear Becky

The following breeds may be feather sexed:

Araucana
Buff Orpington
Rhode Island
Black Giant
Dark Cornish
Silver Laced Wyandotte
White Rock,
Buff Minorca
Turkens
Black Minorca
Single Comb Leghorn
Black Australorp
New Hampshire
Pearl Whites

Sincerely,
Murray McMurray Hatchery

So, watch the video and see how it is done. They show some great photos that you can learn from! Hope this helps us all!

You could put some of those cockerels over some HRIR hens and then breed only the female offspring back to a Rhodebar. That would improve your Rhodebar strain too.

That's the plan... although learning to maintain the quality of the RIR I have is a higher priority.
I'm grateful to Gary for his mentoring, along with several folks here who are also a huge help.

What is the purpose of knowing the sex of a chick at this young age. ?

Is this like peaking under the Christmas wrap paper to try to tell what your gift is your Grandma gave you?

The reason you are getting so many males than females this year is Global Warming. Its Al Gores Fault.

I have about 20 Buff Brahma chicks and I have not even got a clue how many are pullets or ckls I have. I am just trying to keep them alive and free of varments and stray dogs. One year I got six males and one pullet. Bummer as my son use to say.

Maybe I am just a fundy duddy or something.

I am going to order me some of these some day. Real R I Reds.

They will reveal themselves when they are ready.
