Strange question for those of you with HRIR... what do you use for roosts? type and size?
I am beginning to think my current roosts (large dowels) are not going to be wide enough for the HRIR.
I am in the process of fixing up their new location and am trying to determine what might be best to use for them as adults.
Since these are obviously going to be larger than my previous birds, I thought I'd ask some advice.
Thanks

My roosts are mostly 2x4's. I do have a couple of lower roosts in the same coops that have 1x3's and 2x3's. The birds jump up on them to get on the 2x4's.

I also use 2x4's & 2x3's.

These birds are only 20 weeks old. They will fill out nicely and carry their width to the rear same as their parents. They are also coming out of their juvenile molt and don't have full tails. No football shaped Reds at my house.

I don't see many lines with deep yellow legs, that's to bad because yellow legs sure look good.

Thanks for the comments.

Timing is everything. Just last night as I was observing the older group of youngsters, I noticed how incredibly yellow the cockerel's legs are - the cockerel from your egg, hatched 3/29/13. Yellow yellow. He is quite a looker, I think.

I use 2x2's for everything. Never had a problem with them.

I posted this a few months ago...

I'm going to start adding marigold to the feed that I am feeding the birds I plan on showing to help with leg color but the chick above is just on feed with nothing added to it.
Mines not quite that yellow. I agree with the photo shop theory!

Legs and toes: Lower thighs rich, dark red. Shanks and toes rich yellow tinged with reddish horn. A line of red pigment down the sides of shanks, extending to tips of toes, is desirable. This is from my old APA standard.

Some of the Darker I mean dark colored strains with the black quill color do not have a lot of yellow in the leg color.

I have seen some where the legs are do dark in horn they may not have any and the red tinged stuff is not there.

What is more important I use to ask my sell the yellow legs and the red tinged or keep my strain from getting lighter in surface color and loose my quill color.

Just a thought. Kind of like people that kill all their birds because the don't have a five point comb.

Not all chickens will meat the standard that is why their are points for faults. Hopefuly you will keep the highest scoring bird with the best all around good points.

I wish I knew how to photo-shop pics .... Then I would really have some birds to show you all.
They are not as yellow as they get older.

After reading some of the last posts I had to go back through and look at some of my pictures and came across this one that I took last month. I am in no way a photographer nor do I have the best of camera's but I just really like this picture of these two birds. These are my older Gary Underwood birds that I hatched from eggs last November. I absolutely love the temperament of this cock bird. What do you folks think of this pair. I know the pullet is behind the cockerel but you can still see color and breast. lol They were 7 months old on this picture.
